Its defining detail was not just the name: Harley’s parts catalogs identify Bad Boy-specific black components that set it apart visually from the related FXSTS Springer.
What is a Harley-Davidson Bad Boy?
The Bad Boy is Harley-Davidson’s FXSTSB model, introduced as a Softail Springer. Harley’s model information lists the FXSTSB for 1995–1997. Harley-Davidson’s model information provides the official model-code and year-range reference.
What made the Bad Boy different from the FXSTS Springer?
The models share the Springer and Softail family connection, and Harley’s parts catalogs show shared front-end components across FXSTSB and FXSTS. The Bad Boy’s darker appearance, however, was supported by distinct cataloged trim rather than being only a paint description.
- A contemporary Cycle World preview from October 1994 described black paint across much of the Springer front end and the rear-fender stays.
- Harley’s 1995–1996 catalog lists black rocker parts specific to FXSTSB.
- The 1997 fender-assembly listings identify black FXSTSB supports, while chrome supports are listed for FXSTC and FXSTS.
That combination of shared Springer architecture and Bad Boy-coded black parts is the useful distinction for anyone identifying one or checking restoration fitment. The catalogs establish historical parts applications, not that those parts remain available today.

How can you identify Bad Boy parts?
Start with the model year and code, then check the relevant parts-catalog entry. Harley’s 1995–1996 Softail catalog includes both shared Springer items and FXSTSB-specific black rocker components; the 1997 catalog identifies FXSTSB black fender supports. The catalog listings are evidence of historical fitment, not an interchange guarantee or a statement of current stock.
Before ordering replacement or used parts, verify the year and model code against the motorcycle’s VIN and the applicable catalog. A part that fits an FXSTS may be shared Springer hardware, while a black trim or support component may be specific to the FXSTSB.

What specifications are reported for the FXSTSB?
Louis Motorrad’s secondary database reports 1,338 cc, two cylinders, a vehicle weight of 295 kg, and a seat height of 654 mm for its FXSTSB entry. Louis does not state a publication year on the accessed database page, and those figures are not a verified Harley-Davidson year-by-year factory specification table; check the specific model year and market before relying on them.

The available model and parts records establish the FXSTSB name, its 1995–1997 listing, and its cataloged black components. They do not establish a production total, sales figure, or a complete year-by-year list of changes. An estimated production count should not be treated as fact without a reliable source.
