What Makes the Ferrari F50 So Analog—and Would Modern Drivers Really Struggle?

The Ferrari F50 pairs a carbon-fibre monocoque and F1-derived V12 with no power steering, ABS or brake servo assistance. Here’s what its analog reputation means—and what it doesn’t prove about modern drivers.

The Ferrari F50’s analog character comes from the controls it leaves to the driver: Ferrari says the road car has no power steering, ABS or brake servo assistance. That makes its handling and braking inputs more direct, but it does not prove that modern drivers would be unable to drive it. The car’s demanding reputation is best understood through its equipment and engineering, not as a claim about an entire generation of drivers.

What makes the Ferrari F50 analog?

Ferrari itself calls the F50 “a very analogue car.” In practical terms, that description points to a lack of several forms of assistance common in modern performance cars. Ferrari says the F50 has no power steering, anti-lock braking system (ABS) or brake servo assistance. The driver therefore has to provide more of the steering and braking effort, rather than relying on those systems to help.

That does not mean the F50 is primitive. Ferrari describes a carbon-fibre monocoque and major components derived from Formula One, combining advanced materials and racing-influenced engineering with a more direct set of driver inputs. “Analog” here is a useful shorthand for that balance: sophisticated construction, but fewer electronic and mechanical aids between driver and car.

Would modern drivers really struggle to drive an F50?

There is no verified statistic or controlled comparison establishing how many modern drivers could safely drive an F50. The headline’s “wouldn’t survive” is a provocation, not a demonstrated fact about today’s drivers.

The equipment does support a narrower point: someone accustomed to power steering and assisted braking would encounter different physical demands in the F50. But whether a particular person can manage those inputs safely depends on that driver and the circumstances; the available evidence does not justify a broader verdict about modern drivers as a group.

What is the road-going F50’s engine and performance?

The road car uses a naturally aspirated 4.7-litre V12 derived from the engine in Ferrari’s 1990 Formula One car. Ferrari rates it at 520 cv, with maximum power at 8,500 rpm. The high-revving, naturally aspirated configuration is part of the F50’s distinctive character, but the figures are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results.

Ferrari lists the acceleration and top-speed figures as specifications; they should not be mistaken for independently measured results. The F50 GT is a separate project, not the road car: Ferrari lists that car at 750 hp at 10,500 rpm. Those GT figures do not apply to the production F50.

When did Ferrari introduce the F50, and how many were made?

Ferrari presented the F50 at the Geneva Motor Show on March 9, 1995. Production continued until 1997 and was capped at 349 cars. Ferrari’s May 5, 2025 announcement of the F50 Legacy Tour marked 30 years since the presentation.
