What kind of transmission does a Smart Fortwo have?
For the documented 451 model series, service-manual material describes a five-speed automated manual transmission. Its control unit coordinates gear selection and clutch operation. The clutch is a single-plate dry type operated by a clutch motor; the system is not described as a conventional automatic with a torque converter. 451 transmission service-manual material
“Automatic” in this context describes how the system can choose and make shifts. In automatic mode, the control unit determines gear changes. In manual mode, the driver requests shifts through the selector or, where fitted, paddles. The exact controls and behavior depend on the vehicle configuration.

Why does my Smart Fortwo shift slowly?
Slow or unusual shifting does not point to one confirmed cause without details about the car and its symptoms. In the 2014 Fortwo owner manual, sluggish acceleration or a transmission that no longer shifts can indicate limp-home, or emergency-operation, mode. The manual also notes that with manual gearshifting M selected, the transmission shifts up only to prevent engine overrevving. For a documented 453, the owner manual says shifting problems may indicate transmission oil loss and directs the driver to have the vehicle checked immediately at a qualified specialist workshop. What should I do if a Smart Fortwo transmission warning comes on?
Follow the matching manual’s emergency-mode instructions
The documented 453 owner manual describes emergency-mode signs such as reduced acceleration, loss of some gears, or inability to engage reverse. Its procedure is:
- Stop the vehicle and select P.
- Switch off the engine and wait at least ten seconds.
- Restart the engine and select D.
- Have the transmission checked promptly by a qualified specialist workshop.
This sequence is specific to the 453 manual cited here. It is not a universal repair procedure for every Fortwo, and restarting does not replace diagnosis.
