The report says the helicopter landed on the road during the rescue. Its headline says a woman was trapped, but the story text, citing a Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) spokesman, describes a male in his 30s. The report does not resolve that discrepancy.
Where was the crash, and when was RAC Rescue sent?
PerthNow reported that two cars collided on Brand Highway near the Gillingarra Road intersection in Yathroo, a regional farming area about 130km north of Perth. RAC Rescue was dispatched at around 2:15pm on Saturday, 8 October 2022. The article says the helicopter was forced to land on the road during the rescue, but does not explain why it landed there.
Who was trapped in the car?
The report is internally inconsistent: its headline identifies a woman as trapped, while the story says a DFES spokesman reported that a male in his 30s was trapped in a vehicle. No primary incident statement is cited to settle which description is correct, so the person’s gender should be treated as unconfirmed.
What did the report say about the rescue and injuries?
The story says four appliances worked to free the trapped person and that volunteer Fire and Rescue Service firefighters attended. It also says one other person was involved and had no injuries. It does not report the trapped person’s injuries, condition after the rescue, or whether they were taken to hospital. The cause of the collision is not given.

What is RAC Rescue?
RAC Rescue describes its helicopters as providing search-and-rescue critical-care medical services in Western Australia. The service says it is funded by the State Government, managed by DFES and sponsored by RAC. Those service details do not establish any further particulars about the Brand Highway response.
Historical context for the service
In 2023, ABC News reported DFES Commissioner Darren Klemm’s figures of 645 RAC Rescue missions in 2022 and 692 in 2021, including 127 missions to areas north of Perth in 2022. ABC also reported a DFES average flight time of one hour and 50 minutes from Perth to Geraldton. These are historical, route-specific figures; they are not a response-time estimate for this crash or current service totals.
