Ford CEO Jim Farley’s “Model T moment” refers to a new EV platform and manufacturing system—not the name of a truck already for sale. Ford says the first vehicle built on the Universal EV Platform will be a four-door midsize electric pickup, with a target debut in 2027 and a target starting MSRP of about $30,000. In March 2026, Farley said the pickup was undergoing road testing and was expected the following year. Those dates and price remain Ford targets, not a confirmed sale date or final price.
What Farley means by “Model T moment”
Farley used the phrase to describe Ford’s ambition to make EVs more affordable by combining a flexible vehicle platform with a different production system. He called it “a Model T moment for the company” in a March 2026 conversation. Ford first presented the plan publicly on August 11, 2025, when Farley said, “This is a Model T moment.” Ford’s announcement frames the analogy around affordability, adaptability and manufacturing at scale.
The phrase is an aspiration, not a claim that the new program has already had the historical impact of the Model T. Nor is “Model T” the announced name of the planned pickup.
What new EV Ford has announced
The first planned vehicle on Ford’s Universal EV Platform is a four-door midsize electric pickup. Ford says it will be assembled at Louisville Assembly Plant. The company set a 2027 debut target in 2025; its later strategy update continued to identify the pickup as the platform’s first vehicle and Louisville production as beginning in 2027. Ford’s 2025 announcement and its later strategy update describe the plan.

Ford says the platform is intended to support a family of vehicles, including trucks, cars and other body styles. The pickup is the first announced application; the company has not provided a detailed lineup of later models in these cited announcements.
How Ford says the production system will work
Ford calls its approach the “Universal EV Production System.” In the company’s description, workers assemble the vehicle’s front and rear sections on separate branches, then join them with a structural battery assembly. Ford says this arrangement is designed to simplify and speed up assembly.

Ford’s August 2025 announcement reported the following comparisons with a “typical vehicle.” These are company-stated figures and production aims, not independent tests of a completed pickup:
| Ford’s announced comparison | Figure Ford reported |
|---|---|
| Parts | 20% fewer |
| Fasteners | 25% fewer |
| Workstations, dock-to-dock | 40% fewer |
| Assembly speed | 15% faster |
Ford’s chief EV, digital and design officer Doug Field summed up the company’s manufacturing emphasis this way: “New ideas are easy. But innovation is delivering ideas, in a way that millions can access.” Whether the planned process achieves the stated reductions and speed in production remains to be demonstrated.

Is Ford making a $30,000 electric truck?
Ford’s target starting MSRP is about $30,000. That is a planned manufacturer’s suggested retail price, not a confirmed transaction price or a promise that every buyer will pay that amount. Ford has not announced a trim lineup, order date or current availability in the cited materials, so there is not yet enough information to treat the figure as a firm purchase price.
When is the electric pickup expected?
Ford’s stated target is a 2027 debut, with the later strategy update also placing Louisville production in 2027. In a March 23, 2026 investor-relations transcript, Farley said the vehicle was being road-tested and would come out the following year. The transcript does not announce a firm public reveal date or consumer delivery schedule. A target year and road testing indicate progress, but they do not establish when orders will open or when deliveries will begin.

What Ford has—and has not—specified
The announcements establish the planned vehicle type, assembly location, price target and timing target. They do not provide a finalized consumer specification sheet. Range, battery capacity, charging time, towing and payload ratings, performance, trims and a public reveal date are not stated in the cited materials. Without those details, a meaningful comparison with electric pickups already on sale is not possible.

Ford’s later 2025 strategy update kept the smaller, affordable Universal EV Platform and its pickup in focus while revising other parts of the company’s electrification plans. Ford said it would expand hybrids and extended-range electric vehicles and would no longer pursue some larger EV programs where the business case had changed. The “Model T moment” announcement therefore describes an important planned EV effort, but not an unchanged commitment to every EV program Ford had previously considered.
