Zapata introduced JetRacer in 2022 as a ten-engine vertical-takeoff-and-landing (VTOL) prototype. A launch-era report attributed a top speed of up to 250 km/h (155 mph), a ceiling of up to 10,000 ft (3,048 m), and the ability to flip to the aircraft—but those figures are claims, not independently verified performance results. Zapata later described JetRacer as a flying laboratory for technology intended to inform its separate AirScooter aircraft.
What is Zapata’s JetRacer?
JetRacer is a compact, jet-powered VTOL aircraft concept developed by Zapata and unveiled in 2022. Its “flying deck chair” nickname describes its unusual open, seated appearance; it is not a conventional chair, consumer drone, or established retail aircraft. Zapata’s JetRacer product page describes ten jet engines, computer-assisted fly-by-wire controls, a modular carbon chassis, and piloted or unpiloted configurations.
Those are the company’s descriptions of the design, not evidence of independent safety certification. Zapata’s company history characterizes the craft as a prototype and “flying lab,” with technical elements intended to feed into development of AirScooter.
How fast and high was JetRacer said to fly?
In its August 15, 2022 launch report, New Atlas reported claimed performance of up to 250 km/h (155 mph) and an altitude of up to 10,000 ft (3,048 m). The same report described flip capability. These are launch-era claims, not independently documented test results.
#1 Best Overall
- Compact & Easy to Transport: With a 730mm wingspan and lightweight EPP foam, the Ranger T1 is easy to carry and assembles in under a minute
- Powerful Dual-Motor Performance: Enjoy agile takeoffs and stable cruising with a 1.71 thrust-to-weight ratio, perfect for smooth, low-speed flights
- Aerodynamic & Stable Design: The fixed-wing structure offers excellent stability and efficient aerodynamics, ensuring reliable performance even in low-speed conditions
- Customizable Electronics Layout: Flexible internal compartments with front and rear hatches let you organize batteries and electronics for optimal balance and neat wiring
- FPV-Ready & Crash-Resistant: Includes a dedicated FPV mount and crash-resistant design with detachable wing, plus durable high-density foam for added protection
Zapata’s current product page includes speed and maximum-altitude labels, but the retrieved page does not provide usable values for those fields. Its displayed speed value is incomplete, so it cannot corroborate the reported 250 km/h figure. The available sources likewise do not establish that flips are routine, approved for general operation, or safe for public flights.
What does the design information establish?
- Propulsion: Zapata says JetRacer has ten jet engines.
- Controls: The company describes computer-assisted fly-by-wire control and says the aircraft can be configured for piloted or unpiloted flight.
- Structure: Zapata identifies a modular carbon chassis.
- Dimensions: The product page lists 204 × 204 × 153 cm and separately describes a 2.2 m × 2.0 m footprint. These are the page’s distinct dimension statements; the source does not explain their measurement contexts.
The available material does not establish JetRacer’s current certification, operating permissions, flight-test status, or independently verified performance.

- 🛠️ Sub‑250g Freedom – No FAA Hassle At just 162g (PNP), the Drift slips under the 250g weight limit with room to spare—even after adding your FPV gear. That means fewer restrictions, no registration worries, and the freedom to fly in more places. Grab your transmitter and go!
- ⚡ Assemble in 60 Seconds – No Glue, No Mess Say goodbye to complicated builds. The Drift’s modular design lets you snap on the wings, slide in the tail boom, and lock it down with one screw. No glue, no tools, no frustration. Pack it flat in your bag, then be airborne in under a minute at the field.
- 💪 Tough as Nails – EPP Foam + Carbon Skeleton Built like a tank, flies like a dream. The Drift combines rugged EPP foam with a full carbon reinforcement system—H‑girder wing spar, carbon fuselage strip, and carbon‑rod ailerons. It shrugs off rough landings and beginner mishaps while staying razor‑sharp in the air.
- 🎥 FPV Ready, Right Out of the Box No hacking, no hot glue—just drop your favorite AIO or FPV camera into the dedicated nose bay. Inside, a spacious equipment bay is ready for a flight controller (like ZOHD Kopilot Lite) and GPS. The pusher prop keeps your view crystal clear and protects the prop on every landing.
- ⏱️ Soar for 15–30 Minutes – Big Power, Long Legs Powered by a punchy 1406‑2600KV motor and 30A ESC, the Drift sips from 2S or 3S packs. The roomy battery bay lets you fit up to 1500mAh 2S or 1100mAh 3S, giving you effortless 15–30 minute flight times. Perfect for long, relaxing FPV sessions or catching thermals all afternoon.
Why did Zapata develop JetRacer?
Zapata later framed JetRacer as a prototype used as a flying lab, rather than presenting it as a consumer product. In the company’s account, the project helped transfer technical elements toward AirScooter, a separate aircraft. The company’s history also quotes founder and CEO Franky Zapata: “I’ve pursued the same ambition ever since I was a young boy: flying as birds do.”

The available sources do not establish that JetRacer is for sale or offered for public flights. Zapata’s current homepage promotes AirScooter and flight-center activity, but that is a separate aircraft and does not establish JetRacer availability. Check the company’s current information for any AirScooter offering; it should not be mistaken for a JetRacer purchase or flight opportunity.
