The “semi-cube camper” is the Maxvan Access, a Ram ProMaster-based van conversion whose boxy profile is only on one side. Maxvan keeps the factory passenger-side wall and roof, then extends the driver-side wall to create more interior width. New Atlas reported a starting price of US$99,800 in September 2024, but that is not a confirmed current price.
Why the Maxvan Access looks like a semi-cube
“Semi-cube” is a descriptive headline, not a formal RV category. The Access’s unusual shape comes from an asymmetric conversion: the passenger side and roof retain the ProMaster’s factory profile, while the driver-side wall is extended and flattened. From one side it looks like a box-bodied camper; from the other, it still resembles a conventional van.

According to New Atlas’s September 2024 report, the conversion adds more than 2 inches (5 cm) of overall width and 5 inches (13 cm) of floor width compared with a standard low-roof ProMaster with a 136-inch wheelbase. The report says the changes leave the van’s 93-inch (236-cm) height and 213.2-inch (542-cm) length unchanged. The flatter wall also makes room for square cabinetry and shelving.
New Atlas reported 75 inches (191 cm) of standing height in the lowered kitchen and shower floor area. That is a localized measurement, not a claim that the full cabin has that standing height. New Atlas’s September 17, 2024 feature is the source for the design and specifications below.

How the living space works
Rear lounge and bed
The rear lounge pairs a passenger-side sofa with a driver-side Murphy-style folding bed. Together they form a transverse bed measuring 59 by 75 inches (150 by 191 cm), with a reported 10-inch (25-cm) mattress. The sofa also works as a dining bench, and a swivel table can be stowed when not needed.
A swivel-mounted 24-inch HD television is reported to include a DVD player and HDMI, USB, and coaxial connections.
Compact kitchen and shower
The kitchen includes a stainless-steel counter, oval sink, overhead microwave, and under-counter 76-liter refrigerator. A portable, single-burner cartridge stove can be used inside or outside; the report does not identify a brand or model.
A console that resembles a soft-sided bin conceals a reported 5-gallon cassette toilet and provides extra counter space. For showering, a curtain supplies privacy and a sprayer mounted to the kitchen faucet delivers water. The lowered floor acts as the shower pan and drains it. This is a compact, convertible arrangement rather than a separate enclosed bathroom.
Reported power and climate equipment
New Atlas listed the following as standard equipment in its 2024 feature. These are reported specifications from that date, not independently confirmed current specifications.
- 5,000-BTU air conditioner and 7,000-BTU heater
- Two 100-Ah lithium iron phosphate batteries and a 1,100-W inverter
- Shore-power hookup and an Onan gas backup generator
The report identified a full-length Fiamma awning, solar panels, and rear or roof carrying solutions as options.

New Atlas called the Access an unusually low-priced full-size American van camper and reported a US$99,800 starting price in September 2024. That dated figure is not a current quote: current price and availability have not been confirmed here. The report did not specify taxes, fees, financing terms, or a like-for-like comparison with named competitors, so the label “budget” should be understood as the article’s characterization, not a verified market ranking.
For a useful comparison, request a current out-the-door quote and check what is included as standard. Then compare usable width and standing height, vehicle length and height, sleeping dimensions, accessibility needs, and service support—not just the starting price.

New Atlas reported that Maxvan grew out of Georgia-based Adaptive Mobility Systems, a specialist in wheelchair-accessible minivan conversions. The feature credits Adaptive lead product designer Jordan Boston with starting the original small-RV effort in 2014, using surplus Dodge Caravan vehicles and parts. The company built just over a dozen first-generation Maxvan 01 Mini RVs before moving away from that labor-intensive approach.
The Pathway, described as the first Maxvan 2.0 model, arrived in late 2020 after several years of development. It was designed around wheelchair use, with a wider center aisle, power rear ramp and floor, retention-net shelving, grab handles, and accessible control placement. The Access carried the widened-wall idea into a model aimed at the broader leisure market. The 2024 feature said the Pathway was still on sale then; its present availability is unconfirmed.
