What the Lexus LM is
The Lexus LM is a luxury MPV—an executive people mover designed primarily for rear passengers, often passengers who are being chauffeured. Lexus describes “LM” as meaning Luxury Mover. Its priorities are a quiet cabin, a smooth ride, privacy, premium materials, and rear-seat comfort rather than the elevated driving position or off-road ability associated with a Lexus SUV.

The current LM is the second-generation model, unveiled on April 18, 2023. Lexus developed the original LM for markets where chauffeur-driven luxury MPVs are established, especially China and other parts of Asia. The second-generation model expanded to additional markets including Japan and Europe, but the United States was not included in Lexus’s announced launch markets.

Is the Lexus LM available in the United States?
No—not as a normal new Lexus sold through Lexus USA. As of August 12, 2026, the LM does not appear in Lexus USA’s 2026 model-year lineup, U.S. configuration tools, or official U.S. Lexus model materials. Lexus USA’s lineup includes vehicles such as the ES, ES Electric, IS, LC, LS, GX, TX, and LX, but not the LM.
That means a U.S. shopper cannot ordinarily walk into a Lexus dealer, configure a U.S.-spec LM, and order one with U.S. pricing, warranty coverage, and certification through Lexus USA. There is also no official U.S. LM launch date identified in the available Lexus materials.
The more precise wording is “not officially available through Lexus USA,” rather than “impossible to get in America.” An LM may still appear in the United States through a temporary foreign vehicle, a display or test vehicle, or an individual import. Those situations do not make it a regular U.S.-market Lexus.
Why Lexus does not sell it as a U.S. model
The LM is aimed at a different market niche from the vehicles that make up Lexus’s U.S. range. In markets where large luxury MPVs are popular, buyers may place a high value on being driven in the second row. A spacious cabin, upright seating position, privacy partition, reclining seats, and easy entry through sliding doors can matter more than handling or cargo versatility.
The U.S. luxury market is more heavily oriented toward SUVs, crossovers, sedans, and full-size vans. Lexus’s closest U.S. products are therefore not direct substitutes: the LX is a flagship SUV, while the TX is a three-row crossover. Neither has the LM’s sliding-door body or its purpose-built four-seat rear-lounge layout.
LM seating: four-seat executive lounge or seven-seat people mover
Seating and equipment depend on the country and trim. The two broad configurations are:
- Four-seat LM: the chauffeur-focused flagship. A partition separates the rear passengers from the driver, and the two rear occupants receive large reclining executive seats.
- Seven-seat LM: a more flexible layout for families, business groups, or passengers who need additional seating while retaining a premium cabin.
The four-seat version is the one most responsible for the LM’s “private jet on the road” reputation. Depending on market specification, Lexus lists features including heated, ventilated, and massaging rear seats; a 48-inch rear display; a refrigerator; and a 23-speaker Mark Levinson audio system.

Lexus changes equipment, upholstery, screens, audio systems, seating, and trim availability by market. A European LM, Japanese LM, and any separately imported vehicle may not have identical equipment.

How the Lexus LM relates to the Toyota Alphard
The LM belongs to the same broad luxury-MPV concept associated with Toyota’s Alphard family. That does not make it simply a rebadged Alphard. Lexus gives the LM its own exterior design, cabin materials, suspension tuning, noise-control measures, technology, and luxury positioning.
The distinction is similar to the difference between a mainstream vehicle platform and a more heavily redesigned luxury derivative: the underlying engineering relationship may be relevant, but the LM is intended to be a separate Lexus product with a more comfort-focused specification.
Engine, hybrid system, and specifications
The current LM is sold in hybrid forms, but the exact name and mechanical specification vary by market. For example, Lexus UK lists the LM 350h with a 2.5-liter petrol-hybrid powertrain and both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions.
The UK presentation quotes output of approximately 152 kW, or 206 DIN horsepower, and lists an approximately 8.7-second 0-to-62-mph time for the all-wheel-drive version. That specification uses a nickel-metal-hydride hybrid battery.
Japan’s official documentation uses different model naming and documentation periods, including LM500h manuals for production periods beginning in October 2023 and continuing through 2026. This illustrates why overseas specifications should be identified by market. “Lexus LM” describes a global model family, not one single U.S.-certified configuration.
There is consequently no meaningful U.S. EPA fuel-economy figure, U.S. MSRP, or standard U.S. trim walk for the LM to quote as though it were a domestic model.
Can you import a Lexus LM into the U.S.?
Potentially, but importing one is a compliance project—not a substitute for buying a U.S.-market Lexus. Federal import rules and state registration rules both matter.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a vehicle less than 25 years old that was not originally manufactured and certified to meet applicable U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards generally cannot be permanently imported unless NHTSA has determined that it is eligible and the vehicle comes through a Registered Importer, or through a person contracting with one.

The 25-year exemption is not a practical route for a current LM. The second generation began in 2023 and the first generation began in 2020, so no production LM is close to being 25 years old in 2026.
Possible import categories
Depending on the vehicle, owner, and circumstances, other categories can exist, including:
- Registered Importer compliance: potentially relevant to an eligible nonconforming vehicle, subject to NHTSA’s rules and the importer’s ability to bring that specific vehicle into compliance.
- Temporary importation by a nonresident: NHTSA guidance allows qualifying nonresidents to bring a nonconforming vehicle into the U.S. for personal use for no more than one year, subject to conditions such as foreign registration, no sale while in the country, and export at the end of the permitted period.
- Special exemptions: diplomatic, government-related, show-and-display, and other categories have their own eligibility and use restrictions. They should not be assumed to provide an ordinary ownership route for a U.S. resident.
Before paying a seller or shipping company, a prospective importer should verify the exact vehicle’s eligibility with NHTSA and U.S. Customs and Border Protection, speak with a currently registered Registered Importer where applicable, and confirm title and registration requirements with the motor-vehicle agency in the destination state.
Federal import approval does not guarantee state registration
Passing federal import requirements and obtaining a state title are separate steps. A vehicle could satisfy federal entry or compliance requirements and still present problems with a state’s equipment, inspection, emissions, title, or registration rules.
That is particularly important for an LM because overseas versions may differ in lighting, safety equipment, emissions certification, displays, telecommunications systems, and identification documents. State rules also differ. Get the answer for the exact VIN and destination state in writing before committing to the purchase.
Why you might see a Lexus LM on a U.S. road
Seeing an LM in the United States does not prove that Lexus sells it here. The vehicle might be:
- a foreign-registered vehicle temporarily in the country;
- a test, promotional, or display vehicle;
- an individually imported example;
- a vehicle admitted through a specialized exemption or import pathway; or
- a vehicle being operated in circumstances that do not establish that it is legally available for ordinary U.S. retail ownership.
The official Lexus USA lineup and configuration materials are stronger evidence of retail availability than a social-media sighting, a foreign-market review, or an online advertisement from an independent dealer.

What is the closest Lexus alternative in the U.S.?
The LX is the closest official Lexus product in status and size, but it is not an LM substitute. Lexus positions the LX as its flagship luxury SUV, and the 2026 U.S. model offers passenger and executive-oriented configurations. It provides a high seating position, substantial cabin, and premium rear-seat experience, but it has an SUV body rather than an MPV body.

The TX is closer in practical passenger capacity. It offers three-row crossover utility and easier family transportation than many Lexus models, but it is not a chauffeur-focused luxury lounge. It lacks the LM’s sliding doors, partitioned four-seat layout, and specialized rear-passenger emphasis.
So the U.S. market has Lexus vehicles that overlap with parts of the LM’s appeal, but no direct Lexus equivalent to the four-seat LM executive MPV.
Is the Lexus LM a minivan?
Technically, it is best described as a luxury MPV or chauffeur-oriented luxury minivan. “Minivan” is understandable because of the body shape and sliding doors, but it can make the LM sound like a conventional family vehicle. The LM is designed around executive transportation and rear-passenger relaxation, with versions that can cost and equip themselves far beyond an ordinary minivan.
What should a U.S. shopper do?
- Decide whether you need an actual LM. If the priority is a new Lexus with a U.S. warranty and dealer support, compare the LX and TX instead.
- Identify the exact market and generation. Confirm whether the vehicle is a first-generation LM or second-generation LM, its model designation, production date, drivetrain, seating configuration, and country of origin.
- Check federal eligibility before purchase. Do not rely solely on a seller’s statement that the vehicle is “importable.” Confirm the rules with NHTSA, CBP, and an appropriate Registered Importer.
- Check the destination state. Ask the state motor-vehicle agency about titling, registration, inspections, emissions, and required equipment for that exact VIN.
- Budget for more than the purchase price. Shipping, customs, duties, storage, compliance work, modifications, testing, insurance, and registration can materially change the total cost.
- Verify warranty and service expectations. A foreign-market vehicle should not be assumed to receive the same warranty, parts support, software compatibility, or dealer service as a U.S.-market Lexus.
For collectors: related Lexus LM merchandise
If you want something connected to the model without attempting an international vehicle import, a Lexus LM diecast model may be a simpler option. Check the generation, scale, and seller details carefully: model-car availability is separate from the availability of the full-size vehicle, and a collectible listing should never be read as evidence that the LM is sold by Lexus in the United States.
