A Carolina squat is a modified vehicle stance in which the front sits higher than the rear. The name is informal; state laws do not use one universal definition. North Carolina measures the front and rear fenders, while Virginia’s related four-inch rule measures the bumpers.
What does a Carolina squat look like?
The vehicle’s nose is raised relative to its rear, creating a front-high, rear-low profile. The phrase describes the appearance, not a particular part or a single prescribed modification. North Carolina and Virginia laws address related configurations using specific measurements, but their definitions and covered vehicles differ.
Is a Carolina squat illegal?
It depends on the state, the vehicle, the measurement named in the law, and where the vehicle is operated. The statutes below do not simply prohibit every vehicle that appears nose-up; they set measurable limits for specified vehicle categories.
| State | Covered vehicles | Measurement and threshold | Where the rule applies |
|---|---|---|---|
| North Carolina | Private passenger automobiles: four-wheeled motor vehicles designed principally to carry passengers on public roads and highways | Front fender at least 4 inches higher than rear fender, measured vertically from and perpendicular to the ground through the wheel centerline | Highway or public vehicular area |
| Virginia | Passenger cars and pickup or panel trucks | Front bumper at least 4 inches higher than rear bumper because of a suspension, frame, or chassis modification | Public highway |
North Carolina: fender height
North Carolina General Statutes § 20-135.4 says a covered private passenger automobile may not be operated on a highway or public vehicular area if an alteration to its suspension, frame, or chassis makes its front fender four or more inches higher than its rear fender. The statute specifies that the height is measured vertically from and perpendicular to the ground, through the wheel centerline, to the bottom of each fender. It is a fender measurement, not a bumper measurement. Read North Carolina G.S. 20-135.4.

Virginia: bumper height and additional limits
Virginia Code § 46.2-1063 bars operating a passenger car or pickup or panel truck on a public highway if a suspension, frame, or chassis modification causes the front bumper to be four or more inches higher than the rear bumper. This is a separate bumper-based test, not the North Carolina fender test. Read Virginia Code § 46.2-1063.
The Virginia provision also sets front and rear bumper-height ranges for trucks according to gross vehicle weight rating, and restricts raising a truck body more than three inches above the frame rail or manufacturer attachment points, subject to the provision’s stated allowance for manufacturer spacers and bushings. Those additional requirements are distinct from the four-inch front-to-rear rule. The code page records a 2026 amendment in its history; check the live text for the applicable rule before relying on it.

What do Virginia conviction figures show?
Virginia traffic-records reports provide counts associated with a “Carolina Squat” conviction code. They describe records in a state reporting system over specified periods, not the number of squatted vehicles in Virginia or nationwide.
- 232 records in the Virginia FY 2025 annual grant application for April 1, 2023–March 31, 2024; the same report gives 102 for April 1, 2022–March 31, 2023. See the Virginia FY 2025 application.
- 97 records for calendar year 2021 and 164 for calendar year 2022 in the Virginia FY 2024 annual grant application. The application associates the code with Virginia Code § 46.2-1063; its calendar-year figures should not be conflated with the state fiscal-year reporting windows also used in the report. See the Virginia FY 2024 application.
What the law does—and does not—establish
The cited statutes establish legal measurements and restrictions, while the reports provide administrative conviction-code counts. These sources do not quantify how this stance affects visibility, handling, braking, or crash outcomes. Avoid treating a legal threshold or a policy rationale as a measured engineering result.
