Formula E is the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, an international series in which purpose-built electric single-seater race cars compete on street circuits and permanent tracks. It is not a race between production cars. The basics are practice, group qualifying followed by knockout Duels, and an E-Prix in which drivers manage energy and use season-specific features such as ATTACK MODE.
What makes Formula E different from a production-car series?
Formula E’s cars are purpose-built, open-wheel, single-seater racers: each has one seat and exposed wheels. They are designed for competition, rather than being road cars modified to race. The championship runs at city street circuits as well as permanent tracks, with the event schedule varying by location and season.

The cars are electric, so energy management is part of the sporting contest. Drivers and teams must make strategic choices during the race; features such as ATTACK MODE and, in applicable events, PIT BOOST add further tactical decisions.

What happens during a Formula E weekend?
The core event elements are practice, qualifying and the E-Prix. Many events concentrate much of the on-track activity on race day, but the timetable is not identical at every venue. Consult the event schedule for exact session times.

Practice
Practice gives drivers time on the circuit before qualifying and the race. The number and timing of sessions can vary by event, so there is no single weekend timetable to apply universally.
Qualifying and the Duels
Formula E qualifying starts with groups. The leading drivers then progress into knockout Duels: quarter-finals, semi-finals and a final. The final’s winner takes pole position, the front starting spot. Qualifying therefore combines a group session with head-to-head elimination rounds, rather than relying on one uninterrupted timed session to decide the entire grid.

The E-Prix
The E-Prix is the race. Its length and applicable strategy rules depend on the season and format. For viewers, the key idea is that drivers are not only racing for position: they also have to use energy and time strategic activations effectively.

What are ATTACK MODE and PIT BOOST?
ATTACK MODE
ATTACK MODE is a temporary power advantage that a driver activates during a designated part of the circuit. Choosing when to take it is tactical: an activation can help a driver attack or defend, but the driver has to fit it into the race plan. The exact activation rules and time allowance depend on the season.
PIT BOOST
Under Formula E’s 2025/26 Season 12 rules, PIT BOOST is required at designated events. It involves a 30-second stop in the pit lane at 600 kW, adding 10% energy—3.85 kWh. That figure describes the Season 12 rule; it should not be assumed to apply to every race or later season.

How quick is a Formula E car?
For the 2025/26 season, Formula E identifies GEN3 Evo as the competing car generation. The championship says GEN3 Evo can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 1.82 seconds (0 to 100 km/h in 1.86 seconds). These are Formula E’s published specifications, not an independently reported test result. Formula E also says all-wheel drive is available during qualifying Duels, race starts and ATTACK MODE. See its GEN3 Evo technical explainer.

GEN3 Evo specifications should not be confused with those of GEN4, the next generation announced for 2026/27. Formula E’s announced GEN4-era race formats also change the event structure.
