Formula E teams can draw on sponsorship and manufacturer backing, while a cost cap limits only specified regulated costs—not every expense associated with a team or manufacturer. The public material cited here does not establish current prize payouts, team-by-team sponsorship totals, or profitability, so there is no reliable basis to assign a standard revenue share or a champion’s payout.
Where Formula E teams’ money and support can come from
Sponsorship
Sponsorship is a recognized part of the commercial model. The FIA’s team financial regulations refer to work to identify, negotiate, agree and service sponsorship arrangements (FIA financial regulations). Sponsors may receive brand visibility and activations tied to a team, as set out in their individual contracts. The rules confirm that sponsorship activity exists; they do not disclose how much any particular team earns.

Manufacturer backing
A manufacturer may be involved in supporting a team, but team operations and manufacturer investment should not be treated as one undifferentiated budget. The FIA framework addresses manufacturers’ powertrain research and development, manufacturing and ongoing mandatory services under separate financial regulations (FIA financial regulations). That distinction does not establish whether a named team receives cash, technical services, supplied components or another form of support, nor the value of any such arrangement.
Prize money and central distributions
Do Formula E teams get prize money? The public sources cited here do not establish a current prize-payment formula or reliable team-by-team receipts. Without disclosure for a particular season and agreement, claims about a champion’s payout or a fixed percentage of championship revenue are not substantiated. Formula 1’s payment arrangements cannot be used as evidence for Formula E.

What the Formula E cost cap covers
The FIA’s 2025 team financial regulations cap certain costs incurred directly by a team or through a related entity during a reporting period. Teams retain discretion over how to allocate resources within the defined cap; it is not a published ceiling on every cost of running a team. The 2025 regulations took effect on 1 October 2025 (FIA financial regulations).
Manufacturer powertrain development, manufacturing and mandatory services are dealt with separately under manufacturer financial regulations (FIA financial regulations). As a result, the team cap should not be read as a limit on all manufacturer spending or as the total economic cost of entering the championship.

How much does a Formula E team cost?
On 29 February 2024, Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds said that “a team would maybe be looking at $30-40m with a cost cap at give or take $14m allowing for exchange rate variances” (The Race interview with Jeff Dodds). These were his estimates in that interview, not audited accounts for a particular team. The $30–40 million estimate is not the cost cap, and the approximate $14 million figure is not confirmed here as the exact current cap.
What is known about team finances—and what is not
The FIA’s rules define a regulated cost framework and include sponsorship-related activity; they do not, by themselves, reveal a team’s income statement. A commercial report description lists sponsorship contracts and team partners among its coverage topics, but is not a substitute for audited team accounts (BlackBook Motorsport Formula E Business Report).

The FIA completed a financial reporting review of McLaren Formula E Team for its 2024–2025 reporting period after the team exited following Season 11 (FIA review of McLaren Formula E Team reporting). That demonstrates regulatory review of submitted reporting; it does not disclose the team’s revenue, prize receipts or profitability.
