How fordite formed
In older automotive paint shops, overspray settled on the tracks, skids, and fixtures used to carry or support car bodies. As paint accumulated, repeated trips through curing ovens hardened the layers. Fordite.com describes some deeper layers as having been baked many times; the Detroit Institute of Arts Museum Shop says the buildup could reach several inches. Those are descriptions of the material, not standardized measurements for every piece.
Classic fordite is associated with older, overspray-heavy factory methods. As electrostatic painting and industrial paint robots changed production, that kind of buildup became less common. The cited descriptions do not establish that every modern factory produces no fordite or that all material on the market is old.
What fordite looks like—and what appearance cannot prove
A cut and polished piece can show stacked bands, swirls, and abrupt color changes—the visible result of successive paint layers. But pattern and color alone cannot establish a piece’s age, factory, or authenticity. The sources describe pieces associated with particular plants and automotive collections, including a Mini Museum pendant identified with River Rouge and the Detroit Institute of Arts Museum Shop’s Vintage Rouge collection; a seller’s attribution is not independent proof of provenance.

The sources do not provide a validated general-purpose authentication test. When assessing a piece, consider any documented provenance, photographs of the actual item, its pattern and condition, whether it is rough material or finished jewelry, and the quality of the cut and setting. Do not treat a particular color as proof of a specific date or factory.
