Tesla Camp Mode is a climate-and-comfort setting that lets you stay inside a parked Tesla while the cabin temperature is maintained, the center touchscreen remains available, and supported entertainment and accessory power continue working. It is intended for situations such as car camping, sleeping, taking a nap, working remotely, or waiting comfortably in hot or cold weather.
Camp Mode is not an unlimited-power or safety guarantee. The high-voltage battery can eventually run down, connectivity can fail, and some vehicle security features are disabled while the setting is active. What does Tesla Camp Mode do?
When a Tesla is in Park with Camp Mode enabled, the vehicle continues trying to maintain your selected climate settings while allowing you to remain inside. Unlike a basic climate-only setting, Camp Mode is designed around occupants staying in the vehicle.

- Keep the center touchscreen active.
- Provide access to supported music, browsing, games, and Tesla Theater features.
- Supply power through supported USB ports and the vehicle’s low-voltage outlet.
- Continue operating until the vehicle leaves Park or you manually turn Camp Mode off.
Tesla’s newer interfaces may label the feature simply Camp instead of Camp Mode. In most cases, this is a naming or interface difference rather than a completely different feature.
How to turn Camp Mode on
From the touchscreen
- Park the Tesla and leave it in Park.
- Set the desired cabin temperature and other climate preferences.
- Open the climate controls on the touchscreen.
- Select Camp Mode or Camp, depending on the vehicle’s software and market.
Camp Mode cannot be activated unless the vehicle is in Park. Tesla advises against using it when the battery charge is low.
From the Tesla mobile app
On supported vehicles and app versions, open the vehicle’s Climate screen in the Tesla app, then swipe up from the lower control area to find the available climate options. Select Camp Mode or Camp if it is shown.
App control depends on the vehicle and phone having the required cellular or internet connectivity. If the command does not appear or the vehicle does not respond, check that the car is online, the app is current, and the vehicle is in Park.
What can you use Camp Mode for?
Sleeping or car camping
Camp Mode can make a Tesla more practical for an overnight stop because it can maintain cabin temperature without leaving the vehicle running in the conventional sense. However, Camp Mode does not create a flat sleeping surface or supply bedding. You still need a suitable mattress or sleeping platform, privacy solution, and enough room for your occupants and gear.
For Model Y owners, the official Tesla Model Y air mattress is designed to fit across the folded rear seats and trunk. The cited Tesla product page says it includes an air pump, carry bag, adapter, and repair patches, and lists compatibility with Model Y vehicles. Confirm the current product listing and fitment for your exact vehicle before buying, since accessory availability can vary by market.
Naps and long waits
Camp Mode is useful when you need to wait in a parked vehicle during extreme heat or cold, take a break on a long trip, or rest between activities. Set the cabin temperature conservatively, monitor the battery, and do not treat the feature as a substitute for checking on occupants.

Remote work and entertainment
The touchscreen remains available in Camp Mode, so supported music, games, browsing, and Tesla Theater functions may continue to work. Streaming availability varies by market, vehicle configuration, manufacturing date, software, and connectivity. Video playback generally requires Wi-Fi or suitable cellular connectivity, including Premium Connectivity where applicable.
Charging small accessories
Camp Mode can supply power through supported USB ports and the vehicle’s low-voltage outlet. The exact outlet rating depends on the Tesla model and year. For example, the Model Y manual specifies a low-voltage outlet rated for accessories drawing up to 12 amps continuously, with a 16-amp peak.
Do not assume that rating applies to every Tesla. Check the owner’s manual for your vehicle before connecting an accessory. Tesla also warns against plugging non-Tesla power inverters into the low-voltage outlet because of possible electronic interference. A generic inverter should not be treated as a routine or automatically safe Camp Mode accessory.

How long can Camp Mode run?
There is no single reliable answer such as “one percent of battery equals a certain number of hours.” Camp Mode draws energy from the high-voltage battery, and consumption can change substantially based on:

- Outside temperature and weather.
- Your selected cabin temperature.
- The difference between the inside and outside temperatures.
- Vehicle model, battery size, heat-pump configuration, and software.
- How often the climate system needs to heat or cool.
- Screen use, streaming, USB devices, and other electrical loads.
- Battery state of charge and battery condition.
Heating in very cold conditions or cooling a hot cabin can use considerably more energy than maintaining a moderate temperature in mild weather. Tesla warns owners not to use Camp Mode when the battery is low, but there is no universal Camp Mode battery threshold that applies to every model and market.

Practical preparation for an overnight stay
- Arrive with substantial charge. Do not plan around the last part of the battery or assume the displayed range is a guaranteed Camp Mode runtime.
- Check the weather. Extreme cold, heat, wind, or humidity can increase climate demand.
- Identify a charging option. Know where you can charge if the battery falls faster than expected.
- Reduce unnecessary loads. Disconnect accessories you do not need and avoid leaving entertainment running continuously.
- Keep the Tesla app available. Use it to check vehicle status when connectivity permits.
- Set an alert or personal check-in plan. Camp Mode should not replace active attention to battery level and cabin conditions.
Software updates also will not install while Keep Climate On, Dog/Pet Mode, or Camp Mode is enabled. If an update is pending, turn the setting off and allow the vehicle to complete the update when appropriate.
Important safety and security limitations
Camp Mode does not guarantee a safe temperature
Camp Mode attempts to maintain the selected climate settings; it cannot guarantee that the cabin will remain habitable indefinitely. A depleted battery, climate-system fault, loss of connectivity, extreme environmental conditions, or another vehicle problem can interrupt the system.
Do not rely on the vehicle to protect something irreplaceable. Tesla specifically warns against treating the climate feature as a guarantee for a child, pet, or other vulnerable occupant.

Do not leave a child unattended in a Tesla, even if Camp Mode is operating and the displayed temperature appears comfortable. Climate control can stop, conditions can change, and the vehicle may not be able to protect the child if a problem occurs.
Camp Mode is not Dog/Pet Mode
Use the pet-specific setting only for its intended, closely monitored situation. Tesla’s pet warnings require the owner to remain nearby, have adequate cellular coverage, monitor conditions, and be able to return promptly if the climate system stops or the environment becomes unsafe. Neither Camp Mode nor Dog/Pet Mode should be treated as a pet-safety guarantee.
Security features are reduced
While Camp Mode is active, Tesla states that Sentry Mode and the vehicle alarm system are disabled. Walk-Away Door Lock is also inactive. This matters if you are sleeping inside, leaving luggage in the vehicle, or assuming the car will lock and protect itself normally.
Check the vehicle’s locking status manually rather than assuming Walk-Away Door Lock has secured the doors. Choose a safe, permitted location, keep valuables out of sight, and understand that Camp Mode changes the vehicle’s normal security behavior.
Keep ventilation and electrical safety in mind
- Do not block the vehicle’s ventilation paths.
- Do not use unsafe fuel-burning heaters or other equipment inside the cabin.
- Do not modify the vehicle’s electrical system for camping loads.
- Check the specific low-voltage outlet rating before connecting accessories.
- Avoid non-Tesla inverters connected to the low-voltage outlet unless compatibility has been independently and specifically confirmed; Tesla warns against them.
Which Teslas support Camp Mode?
Tesla owner manuals document Camp Mode or Camp for multiple vehicle lines, including Model 3, Model Y, Model S, Model X, and Cybertruck. Availability is not necessarily identical across every trim, model year, country, software release, or vehicle configuration.
Controls may move or change names after an over-the-air update. Entertainment options, outlet locations, safety messages, and climate controls can also differ. Tesla’s online manuals include software-version context for some North American vehicles, but the most accurate reference is the owner manual associated with your exact Tesla.
If you cannot find Camp Mode:
- Put the vehicle in Park.
- Open the climate controls rather than the general vehicle settings.
- Look for both Camp and Camp Mode terminology.
- Check whether the vehicle software is current.
- Review the model-specific online owner manual for your market.
- Confirm that the car is not in a state that prevents the climate option from appearing or responding.
Useful Tesla camping accessories
Sleeping equipment
Camp Mode maintains the cabin but does not solve the physical problem of sleeping comfortably. A vehicle-specific mattress is generally more practical than trying to improvise with household bedding, but confirm folded-seat configuration, dimensions, pump power requirements, and current availability.
The Tesla Model Y air mattress is the clearest direct accessory match for Model Y owners who plan to sleep in the rear cargo area. It is not a universal Tesla product for Model 3, Model S, Model X, or Cybertruck, so do not buy it for another model without verified fitment.

Sunshades
Roof, windshield, and rear-glass sunshades can reduce solar heat entering the cabin and improve privacy. Tesla-compatible sunshades must be matched to the exact model, roof design, glass configuration, and model year. A shade that fits one Model Y roof or rear liftgate configuration may not fit another product version.
Cargo and seatback protection
A Tesla Model Y cargo liner or seatback liner can protect the rear cargo and folded-seat area from dirt, moisture, and camping equipment. Check whether the liner is shaped for the five-seat or seven-seat configuration, if applicable, and whether it interferes with seat latches or access to storage compartments.
Organization
A Tesla Model Y trunk organizer can keep cooking equipment, clothing, charging cables, and emergency supplies separated from the sleeping area. It is convenient rather than essential, and it should be secured so it does not become a hazard during vehicle movement.
Tesla sells and supports selected accessories, but third-party products are also available. Compatibility, quality, and market availability vary. Do not assume that a product described as “Tesla-compatible” is approved by Tesla or safe for every model.
A simple Camp Mode checklist
Before enabling it
- Vehicle is safely parked and remains in Park.
- Battery has enough charge for the expected conditions, with a reserve.
- Weather and overnight conditions are suitable.
- Charging options and a backup plan are known.
- Required occupants are adults who understand the risks.
- Doors, valuables, and the location’s security requirements have been considered.
- Any USB or low-voltage accessories are within the vehicle-specific limits.
While using it
- Monitor battery level and cabin conditions.
- Keep the Tesla app available when connectivity is reliable.
- Do not block ventilation.
- Do not leave children unattended.
- Do not leave pets without the monitoring and return plan Tesla requires.
- Remember that Sentry Mode, the alarm, and Walk-Away Door Lock are disabled.
When finished
- Turn Camp Mode off from the touchscreen or app.
- Confirm the climate system has stopped or returned to the desired normal state.
- Check that the doors are locked manually if needed.
- Remove or secure accessories and verify that no device is drawing power unnecessarily.
