It is the right part only when its vehicle-side connector, radio-side connector, pin assignments, and supported functions all match your installation. Plugging in a harness that looks similar is not enough.
What the ISO connector actually carries
Most aftermarket car radios use ISO-style connectors. The InCarTec guide to ISO leads describes the two main blocks: connector A carries power and control functions, and connector B carries the speaker connections. On the car side, or on a vehicle-specific adapter loom, the connector is typically male; on the radio loom or radio chassis it is female. That orientation helps when you are looking at a loose plug, but the shape of a plug does not tell you its pinout or whether it will work with your vehicle.
The standard-reference assignments below come from the InCarTec guide and Kenwood’s wiring table. Treat them as a starting point only. Wire colors vary by manufacturer and by vehicle, and they are never a substitute for the vehicle’s wiring diagram and the radio’s manual.

Three different products get called an “ISO adapter cable”
The term covers several different parts, and buying the wrong one is the most common mistake. Identify which end needs adapting before you shop.

Vehicle-specific to ISO
Many vehicles use a manufacturer-specific factory radio plug rather than an ISO terminal. This harness takes the factory power and speaker connector and presents the standard ISO layout that a replacement radio expects. Connects2 describes its CT20PE09 and CT20PE02 as products that convert original vehicle power and speaker connectors to standard ISO. This is the most common meaning of the term.
ISO to ISO (orientation or gender adapter)
Some adapters only reverse the orientation of an ISO connection, so a radio’s female plug can meet a loom with the same gender without cutting any wire. Connects2’s CT20UV02 is marketed as a plug-in ISO-to-ISO inverted adapter for this purpose. Because both ends are already ISO, the question here is orientation and fit, not pinout conversion.

Radio-side lead
Some kits place a lead on the radio end instead of the vehicle end. Check which connector the lead terminates in before ordering, because a radio-side lead does nothing for a vehicle whose factory plug is the real mismatch.
How to choose the right adapter
- Record the vehicle’s make, model, model year, factory audio configuration, and the shape and type of the factory radio plug. Photograph the plug from the front so you can compare it with listings.
- Identify the replacement radio’s connector and read its installation manual. If the vehicle does not have an ISO terminal, Kenwood recommends a commercially available custom harness made for that specific car.
- Check the adapter maker’s application list and notes. Connects2 lists specific Peugeot models and years for its CT20PE09 and includes a wiring note. XTRONS lists its ICE/ACS/12-044 for select Hyundai and Kia vehicles from 2017 onward. Neither listing means the part fits every vehicle of that brand, so match your exact model and year against the list.
- Confirm the adapter supports the functions you need. A basic power-and-speaker lead may not retain steering-wheel controls, a factory amplifier, or other vehicle features. Connects2 describes complete installation kits that can include a fascia and bespoke interfaces to keep those functions working.
- Verify the pinout before you connect anything, as described in the next section.
Verify the wiring before you connect
Battery (A4) and switched or ACC (A7) assignments can differ from the radio’s default arrangement, so the default color chart is not enough. Follow the instructions for your specific vehicle and radio.

- Compare the adapter’s pin labels with the radio manual’s table, not with wire colors alone.
- Check that the battery feed and the ignition feed are on the correct pins before the harness is connected to the car.
- Confirm that the ground connection is solid and bare-metal at the chassis point the vehicle documentation specifies.
- If the factory wiring is a different color scheme from the adapter’s, stop and check again rather than matching colors by eye.
Kenwood’s installation notes warn that a harness may need modifying. Its wiring instructions say: “You may need to modify the wiring of the supplied wiring harness as illustrated below.” Treat any modification as a job that requires the vehicle’s wiring diagram.
What a basic adapter may not keep
An ISO adapter restores the audio connection and power. It does not automatically preserve functions that the factory system handled through other modules. Before buying, list every feature you use, such as steering-wheel controls, a factory amplifier, parking-sensor or camera inputs, and climate or display integration. If any of those matter, look for an interface or complete installation kit rather than a bare harness.

Safety and when to call a professional
A plug-and-play harness can avoid cutting factory wiring when it is the correct part, but a matching plug does not guarantee that every vehicle or factory audio system is supported. Kenwood’s installation instructions say: “We recommend installing the unit with a commercially available custom wiring harness specific for your car and leave this job to professionals for your safety.”
Stop and consult a qualified car-audio installer, or the vehicle or radio manufacturer, if the connector is unidentified, the wiring diagram is unavailable, or the factory audio configuration is uncertain. Guessing from wire colors is the failure mode that damages radios, blows fuses, or leaves an ignition feed live.

What to compare when several options exist
- Exact make, model, and year application
- Connector shape and gender at both ends
- Which power and speaker functions are supported
- Wiring notes and any required modifications
- Whether a fascia or interface is needed to retain vehicle controls
- Availability, since listings can show out of stock
Do not choose an adapter on the word “ISO” or on color alone. Two listings with the same label can convert different vehicle connectors.
