On an auto repair bill, G.O.G. is commonly understood to mean “Grease, Oil, Gas.” But that expansion does not tell you exactly what a particular shop included in the charge. Ask the shop that issued the bill what its G.O.G. line covers and how it calculated the amount.
What does G.O.G. usually stand for?
Repair-bill discussions commonly expand G.O.G. as “Grease, Oil, Gas.” One auto-repair forum gives that meaning, while a Prius owner reported seeing “G.O.G. & SUPPLIES” on a dealer maintenance receipt; forum participants likewise interpreted G.O.G. as grease, oil, and gas. What does the charge on your bill cover?
The abbreviation alone does not establish what the shop charged for. In the forum discussions, people also suggested shop supplies, disposal costs, or general shop overhead; these are possible interpretations, not a universal definition. One participant described shop supplies as a separate category, so a bill that lists both G.O.G. and supplies may be treating them as distinct entries.
NHTSA-hosted repair invoices show G.O.G. as a separate invoice category alongside items such as labor, parts, sublet work, miscellaneous charges, and tax. One example records a G.O.G. total of $0.00. How to ask about a G.O.G. line
- Ask the service advisor: “What does G.O.G. cover on this invoice, and how was this amount calculated?”
- If the explanation refers to supplies or consumables, ask which items are included and whether the shop can itemize them.
- If the bill also has a separate supplies or disposal line, ask whether that entry covers something different from G.O.G.
There is not enough evidence to say that every shop uses the abbreviation the same way, that the fee is always charged, or that a particular amount is automatically fair, unfair, or mandatory. The shop that issued the bill is the right source for an explanation of its entry.
