Usually, no. AAA generally will not tow a car just because you are buying it. Its roadside towing is meant for a breakdown, and the published terms of several regional AAA clubs specifically exclude transport connected to a purchase or sale. There is one situation that can look similar but is different: if the car breaks down while you are driving or riding in it as a member, your membership may cover that breakdown, subject to your own club’s terms.
Why a purchase-related tow is usually excluded
Roadside assistance is a service for an eligible disablement. It is not a moving service for vehicles changing hands. Two exclusions come up repeatedly in the published terms:
- Transport tied to a purchase or sale. AAA Mid-States’ membership terms exclude vehicle transportation in connection with a purchase or sale. A tow from a seller’s driveway to your home, or from a dealer lot to your garage, falls under this exclusion.
- Vehicles bought in an inoperable condition. AAA ACE’s Alabama roadside guide lists towing of a vehicle purchased in an inoperable condition among excluded services. If the car will not start or run when you take possession, the club will not treat it as a breakdown you are covered for.
Read together, these rules mean a car you have just bought, or are about to buy, is not automatically a towing case. The question the club asks is whether a covered disablement is happening, not whether you have a car you want moved.
Two separate questions: who is covered, and why the tow is requested
Most confusion comes from mixing up two rules that work independently.

Who can request service
AAA Club Alliance explains that membership follows the member rather than the vehicle. Its guidance puts it this way: “AAA roadside assistance does not cover your car; AAA covers YOU as a Member in any car you are driving or riding in.” The club also says the member must be with the vehicle at the time of the disablement and the service. So you can call for help in a friend’s car or a car you are test driving, but you cannot hand the call to someone who is not present.
Why the tow is being requested
Even when the member is present and eligible, the reason for the tow still matters. A tow to get a car home after a purchase is a purchase-related transport request, and the regional terms reviewed exclude it. A tow after the car fails while you are driving it is a breakdown request. The membership status does not change that distinction.

AAA Mid-States describes the intent of its service this way: “Service is intended to help our Members get back on the road.” That wording points to getting you moving after a breakdown, not moving a vehicle you have not yet taken home.

- Confirm that you hold an active AAA membership and that you are physically with the vehicle.
- Call your local AAA club’s roadside line rather than a general number, and say exactly what happened: the car was not running, it was being test driven, or it had broken down after you took possession.
- Ask directly whether the service you are requesting is covered for your membership level and whether the tow is considered a disablement tow or a purchase-related transport.
- Ask about tow distance, any excess-mileage charge, how many service calls remain on your plan, and whether any benefit has a waiting period.
- If the club declines, arrange transport separately through the seller, the dealer, or a commercial tow company, and keep the paperwork showing the vehicle’s condition at purchase.
How towing limits differ by club and tier
AAA is not one uniform program. Each regional club sets its own tow distances, service-call counts, and waiting periods. The examples below come from published terms of three clubs and show why you should check your own club rather than assume a national number.

Excess miles cost extra
Towing beyond your plan’s included distance is not free. AAA Mid-States says excess towing is available for a fee that varies by location. Ask for the exact charge for your destination before the truck is dispatched, because a long tow from a distant seller can cost more than the included benefit covers.
Recently upgraded benefits
If you recently upgraded your membership, check whether the tow benefit you are relying on has started yet. AAA ACE’s FAQ says certain extended benefits begin seven calendar days after processing and full payment. A tow requested inside that window may not be covered even when the car breaks down.

Practical steps before you buy
- Ask the seller whether the car starts, drives, and can be driven off the lot or away from the property.
- Arrange a pre-purchase inspection, and keep a written record of the condition on the day you take possession.
- Confirm in writing who is responsible for delivery or transport before you sign.
- Look up your club’s current towing terms for your membership tier, rather than relying on a figure from another region.
- Save your club’s roadside number in your phone so you can call from the car if a test drive goes wrong.
AAA’s car-buying benefits, including pre-negotiated pricing for members shopping for cars, are a separate perk from roadside assistance. They do not change the towing rules described above.
Your own club and location decide the final answer, so use the terms for your membership and call the club if your situation does not match these examples.
