What Is A LoJack System? Here’s Everything You Need To Know

LoJack helps law enforcement locate reported stolen vehicles. Here's how current GPS-based products differ from legacy RF systems, what they cost, and what they cannot guarantee.

A LoJack system is a vehicle-recovery service designed to help law enforcement find a stolen car. It is not primarily a car alarm, and it does not stop a thief from taking the vehicle. Older LoJack equipment used a dedicated radio-frequency (RF) signal; current products use GPS and cellular connectivity, along with an app and connected-car features.

That distinction matters because many explanations of LoJack still describe the original RF system as if it were the only product available. LoJack says its legacy RF system was discontinued on March 26, 2026, with recovery operations transitioning to its GPS-based LoJack LE platform.

How LoJack works

A LoJack-equipped vehicle contains a tracking device installed in a concealed location. Depending on the product generation, the device can communicate using legacy RF technology or current GPS and cellular networks. The system is associated with the vehicle and its owner, so the provider and law enforcement can use the device’s information during a theft investigation.

The basic process is:

  1. Report the vehicle stolen to local law enforcement immediately.
  2. Provide the vehicle identification number, license plate, make, model, color, and any other requested details.
  3. Make sure the vehicle is entered into the applicable stolen-vehicle database and obtain the police report information.
  4. Contact LoJack through the appropriate customer-support or recovery channel.
  5. LoJack coordinates with law enforcement, which uses available location information to locate and recover the vehicle.

The owner should not try to follow, confront, or recover the vehicle personally. Recovery is handled by police. LoJack’s law-enforcement platform provides officers with live GPS location data through the LoJack Law Enforcement App, and the platform is offered to law-enforcement agencies at no charge according to LoJack.

LoJack is not a conventional car alarm

A car alarm is intended to deter or immediately announce unauthorized entry. An immobilizer is designed to prevent the engine from starting. LoJack’s primary job is different: it helps locate a vehicle after it has been reported stolen.

Feature What it is intended to do Is it LoJack’s primary function?
Alarm Sound an alert when someone enters or tampers with the vehicle No
Immobilizer Prevent the vehicle from starting or continuing to run No
Stolen-vehicle recovery Help law enforcement locate a reported stolen vehicle Yes
Connected-car monitoring Provide location, trip, battery, maintenance, and driving information Available on newer products

LoJack does not guarantee that a vehicle will not be stolen, that it will be recovered, or that it will be recovered without damage. It also does not guarantee that police will pursue a vehicle in a particular way.

Legacy RF LoJack versus current GPS LoJack

The technology depends on when and how the system was purchased.

System or product type Typical technology or features Important qualification
Classic LoJack Traditionally stolen-vehicle recovery, often using a hidden RF transceiver Generally associated with systems purchased before May 2021; the legacy RF system was discontinued March 26, 2026
LoJack with connected-car features GPS and cellular connectivity, app access, vehicle location, trip history, alerts, and recovery services Generally associated with products purchased after May 2021, but the exact package controls the features
Early Warning Alerts when the vehicle moves without the authorized Key Pass An optional or separate feature, not the same as basic stolen-vehicle recovery

The purchase date is only a general guide. The installed hardware, service agreement, subscription status, dealer package, and activation date determine what a particular vehicle actually has.

What changed on March 26, 2026?

The original LoJack network used a hidden radio transmitter and specialized police tracking equipment. LoJack says that legacy RF service ended effective March 26, 2026, and that no new RF activations are available after that date.

As a result, an older article that says every LoJack unit transmits a dedicated radio signal is no longer accurate. That description applies to legacy installations. Current recovery products rely on GPS and cellular connectivity through the newer LoJack LE platform. Owners of older systems should confirm directly with LoJack whether their equipment and service are still supported rather than assuming the old RF capability remains active.

Features available on newer LoJack products

Current connected-car products can combine recovery service with several ordinary vehicle-monitoring tools, including:

  • Vehicle location through a mobile app
  • Trip history
  • Driving alerts
  • Battery alerts
  • Maintenance reminders
  • Recall notifications
  • Geofencing-related alerts

These features do not mean that every LoJack customer receives the same app, alerts, or recovery technology. Check the vehicle’s agreement and current account details before relying on a particular feature.

Does LoJack work if the car is turned off?

For the classic RF system, LoJack said the vehicle did not need to be running. The unit could draw a small amount of power from the vehicle battery, while an internal battery could continue powering it if the vehicle battery was disconnected.

That answer should not automatically be applied to every current GPS and cellular device. Power behavior, backup-battery design, device condition, network access, and the specific product all matter. If a vehicle has been stolen, report it immediately rather than waiting to see whether the device appears online.

Coverage and tracking limitations

GPS and cellular tracking are useful, but they are not magic. LoJack’s terms warn that wireless connectivity can be affected by network capacity, terrain, buildings, foliage, weather, the device itself, and operation outside the service area.

A location may therefore be delayed, unavailable, or less precise in places such as underground garages, dense urban areas, remote roads, enclosed structures, or regions with weak cellular coverage. A disconnected vehicle battery or damaged tracking unit can create additional problems, although the exact effect depends on the hardware.

Does LoJack require a subscription?

Current connected-car LoJack services use subscription-based plans. LoJack’s renewal page currently lists these renewal prices:

Term Listed price Equivalent monthly figure Billing note
12 months $129.99 $10.75 Billed once in full
2 years $192 $8 Billed once in full
3 years $270 $7.50 Billed once in full

Prices and promotions can change. The exact cost for a newly installed system may also depend on the dealer, vehicle, installation, and plan.

One important catch is that renewing the service does not extend the original Theft Benefit Warranty. LoJack says a renewal purchased after the original purchase does not create a new theft-related payout if the vehicle is stolen and is not recovered.

What if the vehicle is never recovered?

Some original LoJack packages included a theft benefit or reimbursement provision. Eligibility and payment depend on the original agreement, state, vehicle, activation date, and other conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

LoJack’s current product page advertises reimbursement of up to $10,000 if an eligible vehicle is not recovered within 30 days, but the terms vary by state and product. This is not an automatic payment for every LoJack customer. Read the original contract and confirm whether the benefit applies before treating it as part of the system’s value.

What is LoJack Early Warning?

Early Warning was an additional feature associated with classic LoJack systems. It was intended to alert the owner when the vehicle moved without the authorized Key Pass present. It is separate from the standard stolen-vehicle-recovery function.

Common problems include false alerts caused by a weak Key Pass battery, alerts that continue until the complete recorded message is heard, and a replacement Key Pass that has not been reintroduced to the system.

The automobile Key Pass uses a CR2032 lithium coin-cell battery. LoJack’s instructions say that after replacing the battery, the owner should drive with the Key Pass for at least five minutes so the system can initialize or reset it. Depending on the model, the battery may need replacement approximately every six months to one year.

What to do if your LoJack-equipped vehicle is stolen

  1. Call law enforcement immediately. Do not delay while checking the LoJack app or attempting to locate the vehicle yourself.
  2. Give police complete vehicle information. Include the VIN, plate number, registration details, keys, identifying marks, and last known location.
  3. Get the report number. LoJack will need theft-report information, and police entry into the relevant stolen-vehicle database is essential to the recovery process.
  4. Contact LoJack. Consumer support is listed at 1-877-563-0032. The correct process may differ between Classic LoJack and newer connected-car customers.
  5. Share location information with police. If the app displays a location, provide it to law enforcement. Do not go there yourself.
  6. Protect your account. Keep your login details available, but do not publicly post live location information or confront anyone connected to the theft.

How to check which LoJack system you have

  1. Look at the purchase or installation date. Products purchased before May 2021 are more likely to be classified as Classic LoJack, while later products may include connected-car services.
  2. Check the original invoice, warranty, service agreement, and renewal notices.
  3. Open the current LoJack app, if one was supplied, and note which services appear active.
  4. Confirm the subscription status and vehicle identification number on the account.
  5. Contact LoJack support if the technology, theft benefit, Key Pass, or RF-system status is unclear.

Do not assume that a vehicle advertised as having “LoJack” includes GPS tracking, Early Warning, an active subscription, or a current theft benefit. Those are separate questions.

Is LoJack worth it?

LoJack may make sense for an owner who wants a recovery service coordinated with law enforcement and values connected-car monitoring. It can be particularly relevant for vehicles with high theft rates or expensive replacement costs.

The decision should account for the recurring subscription price, the actual coverage in the areas where the vehicle is driven and parked, the product’s current technology, and the limitations of any theft-benefit promise. LoJack should be treated as one layer of protection alongside sensible habits such as locking the vehicle, keeping keys secure, using an immobilizer or visible deterrent where appropriate, and maintaining comprehensive insurance.

It is not a substitute for insurance, an alarm, an immobilizer, or prompt police reporting.

FAQ

Is LoJack the same as GPS tracking?

Not always. Older Classic LoJack systems used a dedicated RF transmitter, while current connected-car products use GPS and cellular connectivity. LoJack discontinued its legacy RF system on March 26, 2026, so the product generation matters.

Can I track and recover my stolen car myself with LoJack?

No. Report the theft to police first and provide any location information to law enforcement. Police coordinate the recovery; owners should not confront suspected thieves or attempt a personal recovery.

Does LoJack stop a car from being stolen?

No. LoJack is primarily a stolen-vehicle-recovery service. It does not guarantee prevention, recovery, or recovery without damage, and it is not automatically an alarm or immobilizer.

Does renewing LoJack renew the theft-benefit warranty?

No. LoJack states that a renewal extends service access but does not extend the original Theft Benefit Warranty or create a new theft-related payout.

The Bottom Line

LoJack is a recovery system, not a theft-proof shield. Current products combine GPS, cellular connectivity, law-enforcement coordination, and connected-car tools, while older RF-based explanations are now outdated because the legacy RF service ended on March 26, 2026. Before paying for or renewing one, verify the hardware, active features, subscription, coverage, and exact theft-benefit terms.
