A Hellcat is Dodge’s name for a supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V8 engine and, by extension, the Dodge performance models that use it. It is not another name for SRT: SRT means “Street and Racing Technology,” while Hellcat identifies an engine and the vehicles built around it. The term has been used for a coupe, sedan and SUV, so the model year and variant matter whenever you compare specifications.
What does “Hellcat” mean?
Dodge uses Hellcat to describe its high-performance, supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V8 and SRT models equipped with that engine. In everyday car talk, “a Hellcat” can mean either the engine or one of those vehicles. It does not identify a single body style.
SRT and Hellcat are related but distinct terms. Dodge defines SRT as “Street and Racing Technology”; Hellcat is the engine designation used in some SRT models. Not every SRT is a Hellcat, and the terms should not be treated as interchangeable. Dodge’s SRT FAQ explains the distinction.
Why is it called a Hellcat?
Dodge says it named the engine after the Grumman F6F Hellcat, a fighter plane used during World War II. That explanation appears in the Dodge SRT FAQ.

Which Dodge vehicles have had Hellcat versions?
Dodge has offered Hellcat versions of three different vehicles: the Challenger coupe, Charger sedan and Durango SUV. The engine name is shared, but the vehicles, model years and available variants differ.
- Challenger: A two-door coupe offered in SRT Hellcat versions.
- Charger: A four-door sedan offered in SRT Hellcat versions, including higher-output Redeye and Jailbreak variants.
- Durango: An SUV offered as the Durango SRT Hellcat.
Dodge’s historical pages establish those model offerings, but do not establish that every model remains in production or is currently orderable. Check Dodge’s listings for the specific model year when evaluating availability.

How much horsepower does a Hellcat have?
There is no single horsepower figure for every Hellcat. Output depends on the vehicle, model year and version. These examples are Dodge-published specifications, not independent test results:
| Vehicle and version | Model year | Dodge-published output |
|---|---|---|
| Charger SRT Hellcat | 2015 | 707 horsepower; 650 lb.-ft. of torque. Dodge also lists a 204 mph top speed. |
| Challenger SRT Hellcat models | 2022 | 717 horsepower; Dodge labels the figure “Dodge, 2021” in its 2022 fact sheet. |
| Durango SRT Hellcat | 2023 | 710 horsepower; 645 lb.-ft. of torque. Dodge’s announcement labels the figures “Dodge, 2022.” |
| Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye | 2021 | 797 horsepower. |
| Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye Jailbreak | 2022 | 807 horsepower. |

How to compare Hellcat specifications
When two vehicles are both called Hellcats, compare like with like rather than relying on the badge alone. Check:
- Vehicle and body style: Challenger coupe, Charger sedan or Durango SUV.
- Model year and trim: Standard Hellcat, Redeye, Jailbreak or another version.
- Rated output: Look at horsepower and torque for that exact vehicle and year.
- Source of the number: Distinguish Dodge’s published rating from a third-party measured result. The figures above are manufacturer claims.
Is a Hellcat a car, an engine or a trim?
It can refer to the engine or, informally, to a Dodge model equipped with it. For precise identification, use the full vehicle name and year—such as “2021 Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye”—rather than saying only “Hellcat.” That makes clear which vehicle and version you mean.
