A “Class B-style travel trailer” is best understood as a travel trailer with a compact, van-like look—not as a formal RV category established by the RV Industry Association (RVIA). A Class B motorhome is a different kind of vehicle: it is self-propelled and built on an automotive-grade van chassis. The key distinction is whether the RV drives itself or must be towed.
What does “Class B-style travel trailer” mean?
In the RVIA category definitions reviewed here, “Class B-style travel trailer” is not a formal category name. It is descriptive wording that may refer to a towable trailer with a van-like appearance. To identify a particular unit, check how it is built and whether it has its own propulsion or needs a separate tow vehicle.

RVIA defines a conventional travel trailer as a towable RV with a roof and rigid sidewalls, mounted on wheels and designed to be pulled by a motorized vehicle. See its June 2025 vehicle-category definitions.
How is it different from a Class B motorhome?
A Class B motorhome is a motorhome constructed on an automotive-grade van chassis. RVIA’s June 2025 category material defines it as “a motorhome constructed on an automotive grade van chassis.” It has its own engine and is driven as a vehicle. A travel trailer, by contrast, is towed by a separate motorized vehicle.

| Category | Motorhome | Towable RV |
| How it moves | Self-propelled | Pulled by a separate motorized vehicle |
| Basic construction in RVIA definitions | Built on an automotive-grade van chassis | Wheeled unit with a roof and rigid sidewalls, designed for towing |
| Common consumer wording | Often called a “van camper” by RVIA | “Class B-style” may describe appearance, but is not a formal category in the reviewed RVIA definitions |
RVIA lists motorhomes and travel trailers as separate RV entities, reflecting the distinction between vehicles with their own motor power and units mounted on or towed by another vehicle. Its consumer RV Types and Terms page says Class B motorhomes are commonly called van campers.
Does a van-like appearance make a trailer a Class B?
No. Appearance alone does not determine the RV category. A compact trailer may resemble a van or have a similar design style, but if it is built to be towed, it remains a towable travel trailer. A Class B motorhome is a self-propelled motorhome built on a van chassis.

What should you compare when choosing between them?
The category label tells you the basic vehicle type, not the details of a particular model. Compare the manufacturer’s current specifications for the units you are considering:
- Towing compatibility: For a trailer, confirm the tow vehicle’s capacity and the trailer’s towing requirements. Do not infer compatibility from a “Class B-style” label.
- Dimensions and capacity: Check the specific unit’s dimensions and sleeping capacity rather than assuming a category-wide size or occupancy.
- Layout and amenities: Compare the actual floor plan and equipment; the category name does not guarantee particular features.
- Total costs: Compare the purchase and operating costs of the specific motorhome or trailer and, for a trailer, account for the separate tow vehicle.
RVIA’s general RV definition describes recreational vehicles as units that may have their own motor power or be mounted on or towed by another vehicle. That distinction is the useful starting point; model specifications are needed for practical comparisons.
