Those releases make the more interesting question not whether the brand might revisit its past, but what a true MoonSwatch-scale Formula 1 event would have needed to do differently.
Why the original Formula 1 was ready for a revival
TAG Heuer says the Formula 1 Series 1 launched in 1986 and was the first watch to bear the TAG Heuer name. Its bright colors and composite construction set it apart from the more conventional image of a Swiss watch, while its motorsport identity made the collection an accessible entry point into the brand’s racing story. TAG Heuer says more than three million Series 1 watches were produced. TAG Heuer’s history of the Formula 1 collection and its account of the Kith collaboration make the scale and significance of that first generation clear.
That backstory gives a retro Formula 1 an advantage as a concept: it would not need to invent a visual identity or a link to racing. It could draw directly on a design language that already belonged to the collection. The challenge would be making that history feel immediate to a new audience, rather than simply producing a faithful reissue for existing collectors.
What made the MoonSwatch a useful comparison
Swatch launched the OMEGA x Swatch MoonSwatch in 2022 as a colorful Bioceramic interpretation of the Speedmaster Moonwatch. The original launch comprised 11 watches. That combination—an instantly recognizable luxury-watch reference, a colorful and accessible-feeling presentation, and a collaboration with broad cultural visibility—is the useful part of the comparison. It is a model for how a familiar design can become a public event, not a direct product rival to a TAG Heuer Formula 1. Swatch’s launch release described the partnership as a blend of luxury and street-brand sensibilities.

A hypothetical TAG Heuer version would have had a different foundation. Instead of borrowing the Speedmaster’s Moonwatch cues, it could lean on Formula 1’s own 1980s colors, shapes and motorsport associations. A collaborator might have added cultural reach, as Kith did in 2024, but the defining idea would be a recognizable Series 1 brought back in a way that felt energetic and easy to understand.

What a genuine Formula 1 “moment” would have required
The 2024 Kith collaboration is the closest real-world answer because it directly revived the Series 1 design. The 2025 Solargraph took another route: it carried forward the collection’s colorful character while using a modern Solargraph movement. Together, they show that TAG Heuer has revisited both the design and the spirit of the original, but through distinct releases rather than one single event that combined them.
A hypothetical MoonSwatch-scale launch would have made that combination its central proposition: unmistakable Series 1 styling, an accessible point of entry, and a simple story linking the watch to Formula 1 history. That is an editorial counterfactual, not a description of an announced TAG Heuer product. The available official release information does not establish a current price comparison or a single shared availability model across the three releases.

TAG Heuer returned as Formula 1’s Official Timekeeper at the start of the 2025 season, alongside the beginning of a ten-year LVMH partnership. That gives a retro Formula 1 idea a timely motorsport backdrop, but it is not evidence that the brand plans another vintage-inspired watch. Formula 1’s announcement concerns the timekeeping role and partnership, not a product launch.

Anyone drawn to the original’s bright, compact design can explore vintage TAG Heuer Formula 1 watches, especially Series 1 references. Vintage listings vary by reference and condition, so a model name or photograph alone is not enough to establish what a particular watch is or whether it has been well maintained. Compare the reference, condition, service history, seller reputation and return terms before buying.
