Honda’s partnership with General Motors now runs on two tracks with different outcomes. On hydrogen, the joint fuel-cell system reached a production vehicle, the 2025 Honda CR-V e:FCEV. But Honda announced on January 20, 2026 that it will end production of that GM-linked system before the end of 2026 and move to a next-generation fuel-cell system it develops on its own. On EVs, the cooperation produced the Honda Prologue and Acura ZDX, but the affordable EV series announced in 2022 has no confirmed current status as of October 8, 2026.
What Honda’s January 2026 decision changes for hydrogen
On January 20, 2026, Honda announced that it will end production, before the end of 2026, of the current fuel-cell system made by Fuel Cell System Manufacturing LLC (FCSM), the joint venture it formed with GM in Brownstown, Michigan. After production ends, Honda intends to use a next-generation fuel-cell system that it develops independently. The company says it still intends to grow hydrogen as a business.
The announcement gives no launch date, cost, performance specification, or named vehicle for the successor system. What it does establish is a change in structure: the hydrogen system Honda and GM co-developed is being replaced by a Honda-only design. The announcement does not address service and parts for vehicles already on the road, so current owners should confirm support arrangements with a Honda dealer.
How the hydrogen partnership reached a production vehicle
| Date | Milestone | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 2013 | Honda and GM begin their fuel-cell collaboration | Honda |
| 2017 | FCSM is established in Brownstown, Michigan, to manufacture the joint system | Honda |
| 2024 | Production of the 2025 CR-V e:FCEV begins in Ohio. Honda says the system’s durability doubled and its cost fell by two-thirds compared with the prior system in the Honda Clarity Fuel Cell | Honda, 2024 (Honda’s own comparison) |
| January 20, 2026 | Honda announces that production of the current FCSM system will end before the end of 2026 | Honda announcement |
Honda’s 2024 description of its hydrogen business names four application areas: fuel-cell vehicles, commercial vehicles, stationary power stations, and construction machinery. Those are areas Honda said it was pursuing at that time. The company’s statements do not show that all four have reached commercial scale.

The 2025 CR-V e:FCEV: two ranges, two energy sources
The CR-V e:FCEV is a plug-in fuel-cell vehicle. It runs on hydrogen through its fuel-cell system and can also be charged to drive on battery power. Honda’s 2024 figures separate the two:
| Measure | Figure | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| EPA driving-range rating | 270 miles | Honda’s 2024 figure for the 2025 model; the total EPA-rated range |
| Battery-only driving | Up to 29 miles | Honda’s 2024 figure; the portion driven on battery power, to be read as part of the total rather than added to the 270-mile rating |
Plug-in charging: what it does and does not do
- Honda describes Level 2 charging for the vehicle’s battery. A Level 2 home charger is the relevant accessory for this plug-in capability.
- Charging does not refuel the hydrogen tank and does not power the fuel-cell system. Hydrogen refueling is a separate requirement.
- Confirm charger compatibility by model year and market before buying. Honda’s material does not establish compatibility for any specific charger.
EVs: a 2022 plan, earlier vehicles, and Honda’s own targets
The affordable EV series announced in 2022
On April 5, 2022, Honda and GM announced plans to co-develop an affordable EV series using GM’s next-generation Ultium battery technology on a global architecture. The plan envisioned production beginning in 2027 and named compact crossovers as a target. Mary Barra, GM chair and CEO, said in that announcement:
“GM and Honda will share our best technology, design and manufacturing strategies to deliver affordable and desirable EVs on a global scale, including our key markets in North America, South America and China.”
The program’s current status cannot be confirmed from official Honda or GM statements cited here. Treat 2027 as the original target, not a confirmed launch date, and treat any model name or specification tied to the series as unconfirmed.

The earlier vehicle collaboration: Prologue and ZDX
The 2022 release also recapped the earlier co-development of the Honda Prologue and Acura’s first EV SUV, the ZDX. Both are production vehicles, so they are the clearest evidence of what the EV side of the partnership has delivered so far.
Honda’s own EV and FCEV targets
Honda’s 2024 report sets two corporate goals for electrified vehicles: EVs and FCEVs to account for 100% of global sales by 2040, and 30% or more of global sales by the fiscal year ending March 31, 2031. These are targets, not reported results.
