Selling an electric car does not automatically end a separate battery lease or subscription. The agreement may need to be transferred, bought out, or otherwise settled, and you may remain responsible for payments until the provider’s required steps are complete. The exact outcome depends on your contract, provider, and country.
First, check whether the battery is part of the car sale
Find the battery paperwork and identify who owns the battery and who provides the agreement. Do not assume that owning or selling the vehicle means you own the battery: some Renault ZOE buyers, for example, could buy the car and battery together or lease the battery separately. Renault Group’s 2020 explanation describes those options; its 2023 used-EV guidance says a used ZOE buyer may be offered a choice to lease or buy the battery. These are Renault examples, not rules for every make or market.
Read the agreement tied to your vehicle, including its sale, transfer, assignment, return, buyout, notice, and early-termination terms. Ask the provider to explain any clause you do not understand before agreeing a handover date.
What can happen to the agreement?
Depending on the contract and the provider’s process, the practical options may include transferring the agreement to the buyer, buying the battery so it can be sold with the car, or following a specified return or termination route. The sources available here do not establish a universal cancellation route or a current buyout price.

- WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
- PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
- CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
Transfer it to the buyer
Do not treat transfer as complete just because the buyer has the car. In a historical UK Renault/RCI battery-hire agreement, a private seller had to notify the lessor and provide buyer information. The lessor would send the buyer a new hire agreement, and the seller remained responsible for rent and other obligations until the lessor received the signed agreement. The contract also allowed for a buyer to be ineligible for a new agreement, in which case the seller could remain responsible under those terms. The UK battery-hire terms are a specific example; their present applicability is not established, so use the agreement you signed and confirm the current process with your provider.
Selling to a dealer
The same Renault UK form describes a separate dealer-sale process: the seller provides the dealer’s details and may need a signed trade-in note as evidence of the sale date. Under that clause, evidence of the sale date ends the seller’s rental obligation. Check your own contract for what proof is accepted and whether other obligations continue.

Buy out the battery, if offered
Renault Group says a leased ZOE battery can be bought back, but its general guidance does not establish whether a particular vehicle qualifies or what the buyout costs today. Request a current written quote from the provider. Compare it with the remaining payments and the lease’s mileage terms, and ask what battery coverage or assistance would apply after purchase. Do not rely on old published examples as a current offer.
How to protect yourself during the sale
- Before advertising or agreeing a handover: identify the agreement provider and check the signed contract for its transfer or sale procedure.
- Contact the provider: ask which forms and information are needed from you, the buyer, or the dealer; whether the buyer must meet eligibility requirements; and which specific event ends your liability.
- For a private sale: tell the buyer in writing that the battery is leased separately, if that is what your agreement says. Follow the provider’s process and keep evidence that the buyer completed any replacement agreement.
- For a dealer sale: ask the dealer and provider what evidence they require. Retain the signed trade-in paperwork or other accepted proof of the sale date.
- Get the end date confirmed: ask the provider to confirm in writing that the transfer or sale process is complete and the date your rental liability ends. Keeping that confirmation and the required sale evidence is a prudent safeguard; the precise contractual requirement depends on your agreement.
- Keep records: save notices, forms, emails, signed agreements, and proof of the handover until the provider confirms closure and any final account is settled.

Renault Group’s published figures illustrate why dates matter, but they are not current quotes. Its 20 May 2020 article gave a comparison of battery purchase cost to leasing for 100 months or more, and example battery guarantees of eight years or 160,000 km for a purchased ZOE battery, and five years or 100,000 km for Kangoo Z.E. and Master Z.E. It also described general capacity retention of 70–75% after 8–10 years, varying with use. Its 2023 ZOE article showed package examples of €69/month at 7,500 km/year, €114/month at 17,500 km/year, and €124/month for unlimited mileage. These dated, market-specific examples do not determine your vehicle’s current price, guarantee, battery condition, or contract terms. 2020 battery purchase and lease explanation; 2023 used-EV explanation.

Battery-agreement transfer and connected services are separate matters. Renault UK’s resale instructions say to remove the vehicle from the MY Renault account and reset R-LINK to delete personal data. A second-hand owner may need an activation code or help from customer support to restore connected services. Follow the maker’s current instructions for your model; these steps do not transfer or terminate a battery lease. Renault UK resale and connected-services FAQ.
