An electric car battery gradually loses usable capacity as it ages, which can reduce driving range and sometimes increase charging time. That gradual decline is not the same as battery failure: failure-related replacements are uncommon in the cited fleet data, especially for newer model years. For an out-of-warranty replacement, Recurrent gives a broad estimate of $5,000–$16,000, but only a quote for the exact vehicle and repair location can establish the likely installed cost.
What changes as an electric car battery ages?
A high-voltage battery can gradually hold less usable energy. Drivers may notice that the car travels fewer miles on a charge; charging time can also increase. The extent and pace of change vary by vehicle and use, rather than following one dependable rate for every EV.
A November 2025 literature review by the National Institute of Standards and Technology identifies charging and driving patterns, depth of discharge, humidity, and temperature among factors associated with degradation. It describes 70%–80% of original capacity as an approximate end-of-life threshold used in some vehicle-use research. That is a research convention, not a universal point at which a car must receive a replacement battery. NIST’s review does not establish a fixed lifespan or a single degradation rate for all vehicles.
Does reduced range mean the battery needs replacing?
No. Capacity loss is a gradual change in how much energy the pack can store; failure-related replacement is a different event. A battery can lose some capacity and remain in service. Fleet summaries from the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency both describe failure-related replacement as uncommon, but their figures come from differently summarized datasets and should not be combined.

- DOE summary: The Department of Energy’s April 2024 fact sheet reports a 1.5% failure-related replacement rate across about 15,000 plug-in vehicles from model years 2011–2023, excluding recalls. It reports a rate well under 1% for model years 2016–2023; most replacements in that newer group would have been covered by the manufacturer warranty. - EPA summary: The EPA’s consumer page, citing Recurrent in 2025, reports a 2.5% overall rate outside major recalls and less than 0.5% since model year 2016. It says 97.5% of vehicles in its cited dataset still used their original batteries. Read the EPA’s EV guidance.
These are fleet-level figures with defined cohorts and recall exclusions, not a prediction for an individual car. They support the conclusion that failure-related replacement is uncommon in the cited samples; they do not promise that a particular battery will never need repair.
How much does an EV battery replacement cost?
Recurrent gives a typical out-of-warranty replacement range of $5,000–$16,000, depending on pack size and manufacturer. It is a broad estimate, not a guaranteed invoice or a current quote for every model. Ask an authorized dealer or qualified EV repair provider for a written estimate for your specific vehicle and location. Confirm whether the quoted work involves a complete pack or a repair to selected components, which replacement pack is available, and whether the total includes labor, taxes, and shipping. If you are weighing a repair against selling the car, compare the installed estimate with the vehicle’s value.
Why battery cost-per-kWh figures are not repair quotes
Government manufacturing estimates measure something different from the price an owner pays for an installed replacement. The Department of Energy estimated that, in 2023, light-duty lithium-ion packs produced at a scale of at least 100,000 units per year cost $139 per kWh of usable energy. Its fact sheet says that figure was 90% lower than the comparable 2008 estimate in 2023 constant dollars. What does the battery warranty cover?
Battery-warranty terms depend on the vehicle, model year, market, and warranty document. A time or mileage limit alone does not tell you whether reduced capacity qualifies: check the stated capacity threshold, how it is measured, exclusions, and whether the remedy is a repair, reconditioning, or replacement of the whole pack or selected components. A threshold is not a promise that capacity will not decline before it is reached.
The following manufacturer examples illustrate why owners should check their own documents; they are not universal warranty standards.

Before relying on coverage, verify the exact make, model, model year, market, first in-service date, mileage, capacity-loss threshold, test procedure, and exclusions in the applicable warranty document.

- Ask for a battery-health diagnostic or other vehicle-specific capacity evidence, and find out what it measures.
- Check the remaining warranty time and mileage, plus the capacity-loss definition and exclusions that apply to that exact car.
- If a report is available, confirm which models it covers and what its result does—and does not—establish. Recurrent recommends checking its battery report before buying, but a report is not a universal guarantee. Recurrent’s used-EV battery report information.
- If comparing a possible future repair with the car’s value, use a model-specific installed replacement estimate rather than a manufacturing cost-per-kWh figure.
