What Happens If You Don’t Pay a Toll in Massachusetts?

An unpaid Massachusetts toll can lead to more notices, possible fees, collections, and an RMV nonrenewal hold. Here’s how to check and resolve an invoice.

If you don’t pay a Massachusetts toll invoice, the balance may progress to additional notices or fees, referral to collections, and an RMV nonrenewal hold. Unpaid EZ-Pass violations can prevent you from renewing a vehicle registration; an RMV nonrenewal mark can also block the first owner’s driver’s-license renewal until the matter is satisfied and cleared. The exact steps and amount depend on your notice and the rules that apply.

What can happen after a Massachusetts toll goes unpaid?

The consequences can build over time. Massachusetts toll regulations describe a past-due invoice, a Notice of Nonpayment and possible late fees. EZDriveMA says continued unpaid invoices may be referred to collections and may lead to a registration and/or license nonrenewal hold. The official EZDriveMA toll payment page summarizes those possible outcomes.

The regulations available at 700 CMR 11 also describe a later Notice of Liability and administrative consequences. That document is dated, so do not rely on it to determine a current fee or whether a particular consequence applies to you. Check the current rules and the notice you received.

Your registration renewal may be blocked

The RMV lists unpaid EZ-Pass violations as a reason a vehicle or trailer cannot be renewed. See renew your vehicle or trailer registration. If an RMV nonrenewal mark is on your record, the Non-Renewal Program says it prevents renewal of the registration and the vehicle’s first owner’s driver’s license until all incidents are satisfied and cleared from the RMV record.

This is a nonrenewal consequence, not evidence that every unpaid toll immediately suspends a driver’s license. The RMV says the mark is cleared after the incident is satisfied and the record updated.

What to do if you receive an unpaid toll invoice

  1. Check the notice. Match the license plate, toll date and location, and invoice number. If you are unsure whether a message is genuine, go to the official EZDriveMA payment page yourself or use contact details on a notice you have verified rather than following an unsolicited payment link.
  2. Pay or dispute it by the deadline on the notice. The toll regulation says the responsible party must pay assessed tolls, fines, fees, and penalties by the due date shown on the invoice or notice, or appeal under the applicable process. Follow the instructions on your specific notice; the available rules do not establish one universal toll-invoice appeal deadline.
  3. Use an accepted toll-payment route. EZDriveMA lists a Massachusetts E-ZPass account, a Pay By Plate invoice, an out-of-state E-ZPass transponder, and a Pay By Plate account. Its page says out-of-state E-ZPass accounts do not receive Massachusetts roadway toll discounts. You do not need to buy a transponder simply to resolve an existing bill.
  4. Check your RMV record if renewal is blocked. Keep proof of payment or resolution, then allow the RMV record to update and check whether the nonrenewal mark has cleared. The RMV Non-Renewal Program page explains the effect of the mark.

A toll invoice is not a traffic ticket

A toll invoice follows the toll-payment process. A police-issued civil motor vehicle citation follows a separate RMV and court process: Mass.gov says that a traffic ticket must be paid or appealed within 20 days. That 20-day period is not established as the deadline for a toll invoice. For a toll dispute, use the instructions on the invoice and the applicable toll regulation, 700 CMR 7.
