WhistlinDiesel’s Cybertruck durability-test video showed the truck’s hitch and frame fail during a towing attempt—but the rear of the truck had struck a concrete culvert earlier in the sequence. That prior damage matters: the creator’s stunt was not a controlled test of towing an undamaged Cybertruck, and it does not establish that ordinary towing alone caused the failure.
What happened in the first Cybertruck test?
WhistlinDiesel published “Cybertruck Durability Test #1” on August 2, 2024. The video put a Tesla Cybertruck and a Ford F-150 through a series of stunts and durability challenges. Its description said the aim was to simulate real-life scenarios for Cybertruck buyers and that another episode would follow if Tesla could repair the truck. That describes the creator’s intent; it does not make the stunts representative or controlled tests.

The hitch failure followed a rear impact
In the sequence that drew the most attention, the Cybertruck’s rear struck a concrete culvert before a towing attempt, after which the hitch/frame failed. Electrek describes the episode as an extreme test and notes that the video does not isolate towing as the cause. The sequence therefore cannot establish how an undamaged Cybertruck would perform under an ordinary towing load.
It is fair to say the hitch/frame failed during the towing attempt shown in the video. It is not supported to say that an ordinary tow, by itself, broke the truck: the substantial rear impact came first, and the video was not a controlled test. Electrek’s report gives that context.

What happened in the follow-up?
On January 3, 2025, WhistlinDiesel published a second video. Its description says the truck from the first test had been sent to Tesla for extensive repairs and returned for further tests. That repair account comes from the creator’s description; the available sources do not include an invoice, repair record or independent verification.
What Tesla says about Cybertruck materials and repairs
Tesla describes the Cybertruck’s exterior material as HFS, or “Hard Freaking Stainless,” and says it is “seven-times stronger and more scratch resistant than typical exterior steel materials.” This is Tesla’s manufacturer claim, not an independent comparative finding and not a direct validation or rebuttal of the video’s results. Tesla’s Cybertruck page describes the material.

Tesla also warns that stainless exterior panels can develop superficial pitting and staining. Its collision-repair guidance says welding cannot be performed on Cybertruck stainless-steel components and directs professionals to follow Tesla procedures for scratch removal. Those instructions show that repair work is specialized; they do not establish what work was done to the test truck. See Tesla’s Cybertruck collision-repair guidance.

No connection is established in the available sources. Tesla’s cantrail recall and a later wheel-and-rotor recall are separate documented vehicle matters; neither is evidence about the 2024 stunt.

Cantrail panel recall
Tesla’s support page describes a recall affecting certain model-year 2024 and 2025 Cybertrucks built from November 13, 2023, through February 27, 2025. The stainless cantrail panel may delaminate at its adhesive joint and separate from the vehicle. Tesla says it will replace covered assemblies at no charge. Eligibility is vehicle-specific, so owners should check by VIN through Tesla’s recall lookup or NHTSA’s recall lookup. The page does not link the recall to WhistlinDiesel’s test.
Separate steel-wheel and rotor recall
The Associated Press reported on May 8, 2026, that Tesla recalled 173 Cybertrucks with 18-inch steel wheels from model years 2024–2026 because rotor cracking could lead to a wheel stud separating from the wheel hub. The reported remedy is free replacement of specified components. This is a separate issue, not evidence about the 2024 durability-test stunt. Read the AP report.
