The one-off Lotus Evija X crashed into straw bales during its second run at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed. Goodwood reported no injuries and damage to one bodywork panel—not an instantly wrecked car. Its account describes a launch with full torque demand, wheelspin, and a loss of control as the driver lifted; it does not report a mechanical failure.
How the Evija X crash unfolded
The Evija X completed its first run on Thursday morning without incident. Before the second, a stationary McMurtry Solus GT meant the Lotus had to change its approach while lining up, leaving it at a slight angle. According to Goodwood’s account, the car launched with 100% torque demand from all four motors.

Goodwood reported a torque figure of 1,704Nm (1,257lb ft). Within a few metres, the rear wheels were reportedly spinning at 170mph and the front wheels at 150mph. The driver lifted while looking for traction; Goodwood says the car’s balance then shifted and it struck the straw bales. The outlet put the time from launch to impact at about 1.5 seconds. These are figures reported by Goodwood, not independently verified telemetry.

Goodwood’s incident account describes loss of control during the launch sequence. It does not identify a mechanical fault as the cause.

Was the Lotus Evija X instantly wrecked?
No. Goodwood reported that nobody was injured, the cockpit was unaffected, and damage was limited to a single bodywork panel. The car could have run again after inspection, but the post-incident protocol required it to be checked. The “instantly wrecked” description overstates the reported damage.
What is the Evija X?
The Evija X is a one-off, track-only showcase based on the road-going Lotus Evija, rather than a customer car. Goodwood says the two share the tub, transmission, and electric powertrain, while the X uses track-focused engineering, including stronger brakes and slick tyres. That setup and the immediate delivery of torque help explain why a launch demanded precise control; they do not, on their own, establish a cause beyond the sequence Goodwood reported.

Goodwood reported the Evija X’s output as 2,000PS (1,470kW). PS is metric horsepower; it is not the same unit as mechanical horsepower, so “2,000-HP” is a rounded headline formulation rather than the source’s exact specification. The outlet also reported a 6min 24sec Nürburgring lap, attributing the time to Lotus and describing the car as the fastest around the circuit with a production-car chassis. Those performance claims are not independent verification of the crash data.
The Goodwood feature on the Evija X gives the car’s track and Nürburgring context. Goodwood’s 2024 Festival of Speed entry list records it as a Lotus Cars Limited demonstration entry; Lotus’s event media page documents the Evija X’s dynamic debut.
