Uber and Cruise announced a multiyear partnership in August 2024, with a planned 2025 service that would let some Uber riders request a Cruise self-driving Chevrolet Bolt. That service was overtaken before the cited announcements reported a launch: GM stopped funding Cruise robotaxi development in December 2024, then completed its full ownership of Cruise in February 2025 and redirected the work toward personal-vehicle technology and driver assistance.
What the Uber–Cruise partnership was supposed to do
Announced on August 22, 2024, the deal was designed to bring Cruise autonomous vehicles to Uber’s ride-hailing platform. The companies planned a dedicated fleet of Chevrolet Bolt-based autonomous vehicles. Eligible riders could be offered a Cruise vehicle when requesting a qualifying trip in the Uber app. The announcement described a target for 2025, not a service already available to riders.
The partnership combined two different roles: Cruise would provide the autonomous vehicles, while Uber would provide a way for riders to find and request them. At the time, Cruise said it had resumed supervised autonomous driving in Phoenix, Arizona; Houston and Dallas, Texas; and continued testing in Dubai. Those activities provided context for the announcement, but did not establish that the planned Uber service would operate in those places.
How GM’s plans changed
December 10, 2024: GM ends robotaxi funding
GM said it would no longer fund Cruise robotaxi development. The company cited the time and resources needed to scale the business and growing competition in the robotaxi market. It planned to combine Cruise and GM technical teams and focus on advanced driver assistance and autonomous technology for personal vehicles instead. GM said the proposed restructuring was expected to reduce annual spending by more than $1 billion after completion, which it then expected in the first half of 2025. GM’s December 2024 announcement described the strategic change.

February 4, 2025: GM completes full ownership
GM announced that it had completed its acquisition of full ownership of GM Cruise Holdings LLC. Cruise became a wholly owned GM subsidiary, working on autonomous-vehicle technology and advanced driver assistance for personal vehicles. GM said Cruise technology would be integrated into Super Cruise. The February 2025 ownership announcement set out the new structure and direction.
Did Cruise robotaxis launch on Uber?
The cited official announcements do not report that the planned Uber–Cruise deployment launched. The partnership’s 2025 target should therefore be understood as a plan that was overtaken by GM’s December 2024 decision to stop funding robotaxi development—not as evidence that riders could book Cruise cars through Uber.

Uber and Cruise announced the partnership on August 22, 2024, while GM’s change of direction came less than four months later. The original proposal was a multiyear arrangement between two companies; after GM completed full ownership, Cruise’s work was part of GM’s strategy for personal vehicles and driver assistance. The companies’ original announcement is available in Uber’s newsroom.
Cruise robotaxis and Super Cruise are different
The planned Uber service concerned a fleet of autonomous vehicles that could provide rides. Super Cruise, by contrast, is GM’s driver-assistance system for personal vehicles. GM’s 2025 announcement said Super Cruise was available on more than 20 GM vehicle models and that customers were logging over 10 million miles per month using it. Those figures describe Super Cruise use, not Cruise robotaxi operations or an Uber service.

What the shift means for riders and drivers
For Uber riders, the practical takeaway is that the announced Cruise option should not be treated as a launched Uber ride type: the cited official releases do not say it went live. For Cruise, GM’s actions replaced the robotaxi growth plan with work aimed at personal vehicles and assistance technology, including integrating Cruise technology into Super Cruise. Uber’s announcement described the original proposal; GM’s later announcements explain why the companies’ plans diverged.
