Extreme E’s electric racing chapter ended with a separately announced “Final Lap” on 4–5 October 2025. The series then introduced Extreme H, its hydrogen-powered evolution, with the inaugural FIA Extreme H World Cup announced for 9–11 October 2025 in Qiddiya City, Saudi Arabia. Those are historical event announcements; they do not establish a 2026 calendar or current viewing options.
What happened to Extreme E?
Extreme E announced in 2024 that it would transition to Extreme H for 2025. It later announced a celebratory Extreme E “Final Lap” for 4–5 October 2025, marking the end of the electric series’ run before the hydrogen series’ first event. Extreme E’s Final Lap announcement described that event as a final chapter for Extreme E.
Extreme H was presented as an evolution of the off-road racing format, changing the car’s principal energy source from a battery-electric setup to hydrogen fuel-cell technology. The series said it would retain similar race formats and off-road locations; that was a stated plan, not an independently verified account of later seasons.
What is Extreme H, and what did the FIA status announcements mean?
Extreme H is the hydrogen-powered off-road racing series that followed Extreme E. The inaugural event was announced as the “FIA Extreme H World Cup,” scheduled for 9–11 October 2025 in Qiddiya City, Saudi Arabia. The 2025 event and broadcast announcement used the World Cup name.

That event name should not be confused with the earlier FIA status pathway. In 2023, Extreme E and the FIA announced a non-binding memorandum describing a route for Extreme H to become an FIA Championship from its inaugural 2025 season. The announcement said World Championship status was an intention for 2026 only if the required criteria were met; it did not guarantee that status or establish that it was subsequently granted. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem said, “Hydrogen is an important part of that mix, and we have developed a set of safety regulations for hydrogen-powered vehicles which is part of the FIA’s International Sporting Code.” The FIA and Extreme E announcement contains the pathway and quotation.
How does Extreme H’s hydrogen race car work?
The series’ purpose-built Pioneer 25 combines a hydrogen fuel cell with a battery system. In its 2024 announcement, Extreme E named Symbio as the fuel-cell provider and described the 75 kW fuel cell as the car’s principal energy source. The series said the hydrogen would be green hydrogen produced using solar power and water. Its separate car announcement also lists a battery system, so the fuel cell should not be described as the car’s only energy-storage component. These are announced design details, not independent verification of performance or lifecycle emissions.

Extreme E and Symbio presented the programme as an innovation platform. That stated aim does not, by itself, demonstrate that the racing technology has reduced emissions in road vehicles. The reviewed announcements do not provide an independent lifecycle-impact figure or named expert assessment of the car’s environmental performance.

The car announcement also describes a tubular space-frame chassis manufactured by Spark Racing Technology and a central single-seat driving position. The package uses standardised parts, while teams may redesign the front and rear bodywork and lights to reflect everyday car models. Extreme E’s Pioneer 25 announcement gives the car details; its Symbio announcement describes the fuel-cell partnership.
