On December 20, 2024, TechCrunch reported that Canoo had placed its remaining employees on a company-described “mandatory unpaid break” through at least the end of the year. The report was based on an employee email obtained by TechCrunch; it did not establish how many employees remained or what ultimately happened to each worker. Canoo later filed for Chapter 7 liquidation and said it would cease operations immediately.
What did Canoo tell its remaining employees?
TechCrunch reported that an employee email described the measure as a “mandatory unpaid break.” According to the email, employees would lose access to company systems at the end of Friday, December 20, and benefits would continue through December. Those are terms reported from the email, not independently verified outcomes for every employee. The phrase is attributed to Canoo in the report; it should not be read as a formal legal classification of workers’ status.
The report did not establish each employee’s final pay, actual benefits, termination date, or eventual claim outcome. It also did not say how many employees were covered by the December 20 action.
How the furloughs and unpaid break unfolded
- December 18, 2024: Canoo announced it had furloughed 82 employees and idled its Oklahoma facility. Canoo’s announcement described the moves as it sought funding.
- December 20, 2024: TechCrunch reported that the remaining employees had been put on the company-described unpaid break through at least year-end. Because the earlier furloughs had already occurred, “all” in the headline refers to the employees remaining after those cuts, not a confirmed count of Canoo’s workforce before them. TechCrunch’s report said the remaining headcount was unclear.
- January 17, 2025: Canoo and certain subsidiaries filed for Chapter 7 liquidation. The company said operations would cease immediately.
Did Canoo go bankrupt?
Yes. On January 17, 2025, Canoo and specified subsidiaries filed for Chapter 7 liquidation. The SEC filing states that a trustee would take control of the debtors and their assets for liquidation. In a company announcement distributed via Nasdaq, Canoo said it would cease operations effective immediately. The announcement quoted chairman and CEO Tony Aquila: “We would like to thank the company’s employees for their dedication and hard work.”

What the reports do—and do not—establish
The announcements and reporting establish a sequence of furloughs, a reported unpaid break for remaining staff, and a later liquidation filing. They do not establish a definitive internal reason for the precise timing or terms of the December break. TechCrunch also reported that Canoo had $700,000 in the bank, attributing that figure to the company’s November 2024 reporting; it is contextual reporting, not a figure independently confirmed here from a primary filing.
