“FAA-approved for takeoff” does not mean the ASKA A5 is a certified, customer-ready flying car. The 2023 headline referred to limited experimental flight testing. ASKA’s current website describes the A5 as an unmanned experimental research-and-development prototype, with type certification still in progress.
What the FAA authorization allows
The FAA uses a Special Airworthiness Certificate to authorize an aircraft to operate in U.S. airspace for specified purposes and under applicable conditions. Its experimental category can cover work such as research and development, compliance demonstrations, crew training and exhibition. It is not blanket approval for unrestricted public operation.
The July 2023 report said the A5 had a Special Airworthiness Certificate and a Certificate of Authorization for limited flight testing. That is permission for defined experimental operations—not a finding that the A5 is ready for routine passenger flights or approved for sale as a type-certified aircraft. See the FAA’s explanation of special airworthiness certificates.
ASKA’s current A5 page describes the prototype as flying unmanned for experimental R&D under a Special Airworthiness Certificate and lists type certification as “in progress.” In present-tense terms: ASKA says the prototype has authorization for experimental R&D flying; the company does not say that type certification is complete. The ASKA A5 page is the company’s source for its current status.

What the A5 is designed to be
ASKA describes the A5 as a four-seat, SUV-sized roadable aircraft that can transform between road and flight configurations. The company lists a hybrid-electric system combining lithium-ion batteries with an engine range extender, six motor systems, wings, and both vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) and short takeoff and landing (STOL) capability.
New Atlas’s 2023 account described six propellers, including an inner rear pair that tilt for forward cruise, and reported a ballistic parachute. These are reported design features, not evidence that the aircraft has demonstrated the stated performance in normal service.

Range and speed are company claims
ASKA lists flight range of up to 250 miles and flight speed of up to 150 mph. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independently validated performance results. The figures do not establish real-world range or speed under particular loads, weather, or operating conditions.
Certification is not the same as a road-ready car
An experimental aircraft authorization does not settle whether a production A5 can be registered and driven on public roads. New Atlas noted unresolved questions in 2023 about NHTSA treatment, roadworthiness, and registration for production vehicles. ASKA’s current page describes a prototype and says type certification is in progress; it does not establish road registration, a production schedule, or customer deliveries.

Current availability and pricing are not established by the manufacturer page reviewed here. New Atlas reported a $789,000 intended price, more than $50 million in preorders representing over 60 vehicles, and a pilot-license and 40-hour training requirement in July 2023. Those are historical report figures, not verified current offers, order totals, or customer requirements.
Accordingly, the A5 should be understood as a developmental aircraft project, not as a vehicle shown to be available for ordinary purchase, road use, or passenger operation. The headline’s “approved” describes a limited regulatory step toward testing, not completion of the approvals needed for a production flying car.
