Yes: Tesla’s first production Cybercab vehicles reported in engineering tests in Austin had no steering wheel or pedals. That confirms the production hardware matches the control-free design Tesla announced in 2024. It does not establish that the car can operate without supervision everywhere, that all regulatory questions are settled, or that consumers can buy one as a personal car.
What the first production Cybercab tests confirmed
On June 30, 2026, Tesla announced engineering tests of its first production Cybercab in Austin. Drive Tesla reported that the tested vehicles lacked both a steering wheel and pedals, and that a safety monitor was onboard. Those details are evidence of production vehicles entering testing—not proof of unsupervised operation or general road-use approval. (Drive Tesla, June 30, 2026)
The milestone follows Tesla’s October 2024 design announcement. Its Q3 investor update said Cybercab and Robovan were designed for autonomy “without a steering wheel or pedals.” The 2026 test report therefore supports the narrower conclusion that the first production units described in Austin retained that design choice. Cybercab is being presented as a Robotaxi, not a consumer car
Tesla’s current FAQ describes Cybercab as a two-seater in its Robotaxi fleet. It does not present the vehicle as a personal-use retail model; instead, it provides a form for commercial-purpose inquiries. (Tesla Cybercab FAQ)

Tesla says a ride begins through the Robotaxi app after passengers enter and fasten their seatbelts. The company describes the vehicle as having butterfly doors and an interactive touchscreen, with space for up to two riders. Its published rear-trunk volume is 20.2 cubic feet; that is a Tesla specification, not an independent measurement. (Tesla Cybercab FAQ)
Where Cybercab rides are available
As of October 4, 2026, Tesla says Cybercab rides are available in limited areas of Austin, Texas. Its FAQ also lists Model Y Robotaxi service in Tampa, Miami, Austin, Dallas, and Houston, but does not describe those other-city rides as Cybercab service. These are different vehicle categories within Tesla’s Robotaxi offering. Tesla says vehicle assignment initially depends on availability and group size, so riders should not assume they can freely choose the model. (Tesla Cybercab FAQ)

What Tesla says about passenger accessibility
Tesla lists wheelchair-height bench seating, trunk space for wheelchairs and other assistive devices, cabin space for service animals, and Braille on the doors and overhead buttons. The company also says riders with disabilities may bring service animals. These are Tesla’s stated design and service provisions; the FAQ does not establish that every accessibility need or trip circumstance is covered. (Tesla Cybercab FAQ)

Under the U.S. system described by NHTSA, manufacturers certify that their vehicles meet federal performance standards, and the agency oversees compliance. An Audit Query is an inquiry into the certification basis: NHTSA’s announcement is not a final finding of noncompliance, a recall announcement, or evidence that a particular exemption was granted. Administrator Jonathan Morrison said, “NHTSA fully supports the safe development and deployment of automated vehicles. But as the federal regulator, we need to ensure that all of our laws are followed.” (NHTSA, September 4, 2026)
