What engine is in the 2025 BMW M4?
BMW identifies the US-market 2025 M4’s engine as the S58B30T0: a 2,993 cc, or 3.0-liter, gasoline inline-six with M TwinPower Turbo technology. The same basic engine family appears across the M4 range, but its published power and torque ratings vary by trim and drivetrain. The CS has its own higher-output specification.
BMW describes the engine as using two mono-scroll turbochargers, indirect charge-air cooling, high-precision injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve control, and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing. These systems combine turbocharging and charge-air cooling with variable control of air intake and valve timing.

The key distinction is that “M4 engine output” is not one rating: the manual Coupe is the lowest-output entry in this comparison, Competition adds power and torque, and Competition xDrive is rated higher still. The 543-hp CS figure belongs to the CS specifically; it should not be treated as the standard Competition rating.
How BMW says the S58 is built
BMW reports that the engine uses a sleeveless closed-deck crankcase, a weight-reduced forged crankshaft, and cylinder liners with an iron coating applied by arc wire spraying. BMW also describes a 3D-printed cylinder-head core designed to optimize coolant routing. These are manufacturer-reported construction features, not independent assessments of durability or performance.

In its 2025 M4 release, BMW says the engine’s design features “directly derive from motorsports” and points to the stiff closed-deck crankcase, forged crankshaft, and arc-wire-sprayed cylinder liners. That description provides context for the engineering choices, but does not by itself establish a reliability advantage.
How M4 engine ratings have changed
BMW’s launch information for the original M4 in 2014 rated its turbocharged inline-six at 425 hp and 406 lb-ft. A BMW technical specification for a 2021 version lists 480 hp and 550 Nm. These are figures for different model-year specifications; they should not be read as evidence that every intervening M4 used identical hardware or had a continuously rising rating.

BMW lists an engine-oil capacity of 7.4 US quarts for the 2025 M4 CS. That capacity is specific to the cited CS specification and does not establish a universal oil grade or capacity for every M4 year, trim, or market. Check the vehicle-specific BMW owner’s documentation for the required oil specification and service procedure before buying oil or performing maintenance.
