Ferrari—for now. Cadillac Formula 1 Team will use a Ferrari power unit and Ferrari gearbox for the 2026 F1 season. General Motors is developing its own Formula 1 power unit through GM Performance Power Units LLC, with the FIA approving the company as a supplier from 2029.

That makes Ferrari Cadillac’s initial powertrain partner, not its permanent engine supplier. Cadillac’s long-term objective is to become a full works operation using a GM-built power unit, but the 2029 target remains dependent on development, testing, regulatory approval and homologation.

Is Cadillac using a Ferrari engine or a Cadillac engine?
In 2026, it is using a Ferrari power unit, not a GM-built Cadillac power unit. “Power unit” is the more accurate F1 term because the propulsion system includes more than the combustion engine. It combines the turbocharged V6 with the hybrid energy-recovery systems, battery and associated control hardware.
Ferrari’s published specification for its 2026 unit identifies the 067/6: a 1,600 cc, 90-degree V6 with single turbocharging, direct injection, lithium-ion batteries and a single MGU-K rated at up to 350 kW. Ferrari lists those details in its SF-26 technical information.

Why is Ferrari supplying Cadillac?
Cadillac was approved as Formula 1’s eleventh team for 2026, but GM’s own F1 power unit was not ready for the team’s first season. Buying a power unit from an established manufacturer gives Cadillac a practical way to enter the championship while GM continues its separate engine program.
This is a common type of arrangement in Formula 1: a team can design and build its own chassis while purchasing a power unit and, in some cases, a gearbox from another manufacturer. It allows the new entrant to concentrate on establishing its team, car and operations instead of trying to complete every major component before its debut.
Cadillac is therefore not a Ferrari works team. It remains a separate entrant using Ferrari customer hardware under the announced technical agreement. The FIA has separately recognized GM Performance Power Units LLC as a future power-unit supplier, reinforcing the distinction between Cadillac’s 2026 Ferrari supply and GM’s planned long-term program.

GM Performance Power Units is being developed by General Motors and TWG Motorsports. GM says the program will use expertise in electrification, hybrid systems, sustainable fuels, high-efficiency internal-combustion engines, controls and software. The company also said prototype engine development and testing were already under way, with a dedicated facility planned near GM’s Charlotte Technical Center for 2026.
However, FIA approval to become a supplier is not the same thing as confirming that a race-ready engine has already been completed. The 2029 date should be described as the approved or targeted starting point, not an unconditional guarantee. The unit must still complete development and testing and meet the applicable technical and sporting requirements before it can race.

Will Cadillac’s F1 engine be the same as its racing V8?
No. Cadillac’s F1 power unit is separate from the 5.5-liter V8 used by Cadillac Racing in IMSA and the World Endurance Championship. That endurance-racing engine is part of GM’s broader motorsport experience, but it is not the engine being used in Cadillac’s F1 car.
Formula 1’s 2026 rules require a turbocharged 1.6-liter V6 hybrid power unit with a much larger electrical contribution than the previous generation. A 5.5-liter endurance-racing V8 cannot simply be transferred into the F1 car. GM’s F1 program must produce a design that complies with the specific 2026-era regulations.

What changes when GM takes over?
If GM’s program reaches the track as planned, Cadillac will move from being a team using Ferrari-supplied powertrain components to a manufacturer controlling both its chassis and power unit. That is the defining difference between a customer team and a full works operation.
A GM power unit could also allow closer integration between Cadillac’s chassis design, aerodynamics, cooling system, energy deployment strategy, gearbox installation and software. Those potential advantages do not guarantee better results: a new manufacturer must still match the reliability, efficiency, drivability and packaging of established F1 power-unit programs.
What should fans remember?
- For 2026, Cadillac uses Ferrari power units and Ferrari gearboxes.
- The Ferrari unit is a 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 hybrid power unit built for the 2026 regulations.
- Cadillac’s chassis is its own MAC-26; the Ferrari supply does not make Cadillac a Ferrari works team.
- GM Performance Power Units LLC is the planned future supplier.
- The FIA approved GM as a supplier from 2029, but that remains a development and homologation target rather than a guaranteed race debut.
- Cadillac’s F1 power unit should not be confused with the 5.5-liter V8 used by Cadillac Racing in endurance competition.
Frequently Asked Questions

Is Cadillac’s F1 engine the same as its endurance-racing V8?
No. Cadillac’s F1 power unit is a 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 hybrid design governed by Formula 1’s 2026 regulations. It is separate from the 5.5-liter V8 used by Cadillac Racing in IMSA and WEC.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Cadillac’s new F1 team uses a Ferrari power unit and Ferrari gearbox in 2026. GM is developing its own F1 power unit through GM Performance Power Units LLC, with an FIA-approved supplier start targeted for 2029. Until that GM unit is developed, tested and homologated, Ferrari remains Cadillac’s engine supplier.
