What did Elon Musk say about Tesla?
In a report published July 22, 2021, Futurism quoted Musk as saying: “I would say I’ve had some pretty tough life experiences and Tesla’s probably responsible for two-thirds of all personal and professional pain combined, to give you a sense of perspective there.”
Futurism said he made the remark at a blockchain conference on the preceding Wednesday. The available report does not include a transcript or recording, so the quotation and event setting should be understood as Futurism’s attribution rather than independently verified against a primary source. What does the headline mean—and what did the quote actually claim?
Futurism’s headline said Tesla had caused Musk “more suffering than anything else in his life.” That is a paraphrase, not the wording of the quotation. In the quoted sentence, Musk described Tesla as probably accounting for two-thirds of his personal and professional pain combined. He did not offer a measurable comparison with every other experience in his life.
