What Driving a $3 Million, 1,817-bhp Hennessey Venom F5 Revolution Roadster Is Like

Dave McQuilling’s brief drive in a customer-owned Hennessey Venom F5 Revolution Roadster offers a glimpse of its acceleration, sound and firm, stripped-back character—not a full performance test.

A brief drive in a customer-owned Hennessey Venom F5 Revolution Roadster gave journalist Dave McQuilling a taste of its immense acceleration, noise and vibration—not a full-limit test. His account describes a car that demanded smooth throttle inputs and made even a short run feel intense. The “scare you silly” reaction belongs to the headline’s voice, not to a measured safety finding.

What the drive was—and was not

McQuilling drove the customer-owned Revolution Roadster at Hennessey’s Sealy, Texas, facility. He had a brief opportunity to drive on the drag strip, but says he was not given a hot lap and did not take the car to its limits. His impressions are therefore a report of a short, controlled experience, not a comprehensive road test or an independently measured performance evaluation.

The Revolution Roadster is the track-focused, open-top version discussed in the account. McQuilling noted extra front trim intended to increase front downforce and a carbon-fiber roof scoop on the particular car he drove.

How the Venom F5 felt from the driver’s seat

Acceleration that called for restraint

McQuilling says his Hennessey handler cautioned him to apply the accelerator smoothly. On the drag strip, he reports that a light throttle application in Sport mode nudged the speedometer into the high 160s. He also describes a rolling run in F5 mode to about 175 mph before braking. Those figures are his account of that drive, not independently verified test results, and he explicitly says he did not push the car to its limits.

Noise, vibration and physical feedback

The report makes the Fury V8’s sound and vibration central to the experience. McQuilling also describes the gear changes, firm suspension and bucket seat, along with a close-to-the-road sensation. These are subjective impressions from his brief drive rather than instrumented measurements.

A sparse cabin, with a few everyday amenities

McQuilling characterizes the car as road legal but sparse in comfort features. He notes that it does have air conditioning, USB ports and Alpine infotainment with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. His description is of the specific car and experience in the account, not a claim that every F5 configuration has identical equipment.

What Hennessey lists for the Roadster

Hennessey Special Vehicles’ 2022 Roadster technical sheet lists a 6.6-liter twin-turbocharged Fury V8 rated at 1,817 bhp at 8,000 rpm and 1,193 lb-ft of torque at 5,000 rpm. The figures are manufacturer specifications; McQuilling did not measure the engine’s output. The sheet also specifies a seven-speed single-clutch automated gearbox and rear-wheel drive.

The distinction between the published engine rating and a test result matters: 1,817 bhp is Hennessey’s stated figure, not measured wheel horsepower from this drive. The first-drive account also mentions a 2.5-second 0–60 mph figure, but that number is not established here by a primary specification sheet or by McQuilling’s test.

What the $3 million figure means

Hennessey’s August 2022 release listed the Venom F5 Roadster at $3 million and described a 30-car production run. The same release said the 24-car Coupe run had sold out. These are dated manufacturer statements about the Roadster and Coupe, not current pricing or inventory information.

A separate August 2023 Hennessey release said the Revolution Roadster started at $3 million, was limited to 12 units and was sold out. That is variant-specific availability information as stated in 2023; it does not establish whether one is available now or what it might cost on resale.

What the drive does not establish

  • A full performance verdict: the account describes a short drive and says McQuilling did not test the car at its limits.
  • An achieved top-speed record: the story mentions a 311 mph target and higher potential claims as aspirations or beliefs, not as a verified result. It does not establish that the Venom F5 holds a world-fastest-car record.
  • A current buying opportunity: the prices and sold-out statements above come from releases dated 2022 and 2023, not a live inventory listing.

Hennessey founder and CEO John Hennessey described the model in the company’s 2023 release this way: “The new Venom F5 Revolution Roadster combines our track-focused hypercar with an open-top for an unmatched visceral driving experience.” That is the manufacturer’s promotional characterization; the first-drive account independently offers a limited, subjective glimpse of what the car felt like to its driver.
