What Does “COPO” Mean on a Chevrolet Camaro—and What Are They Worth Today?

COPO is Chevrolet’s Central Office Production Order system, best known for 1969 Camaros with 427 engines. Values vary by configuration, proof of identity, condition and sale context.

COPO means Central Office Production Order: Chevrolet’s special-order system, which dealers used to request configurations not ordinarily available through a car’s standard options. It is not an engine name. The term is best known for 1969 Camaros ordered with 427-cubic-inch engines, including the rare all-aluminum ZL1. “COPO Camaro” can also refer to later, purpose-built drag-racing cars. Their values are not interchangeable: the exact car, configuration, documentation, condition, provenance and sale date all matter.

What does COPO mean?

COPO stands for Central Office Production Order. Chevrolet says the system was normally used for fleet orders. Dealers found they could use it to request special engine packages for cars including the Camaro, bypassing the configurations ordinarily available through standard options.

That makes COPO the name of an ordering process, not a particular engine. A Camaro described as a COPO is not automatically a ZL1: the 1969 cars included different big-block configurations.

What made the 1969 COPO Camaro special?

COPO 9560: the aluminum ZL1 427

The best-known version is the 1969 COPO 9560, equipped with the all-aluminum 427-cubic-inch ZL1 engine. Chevrolet reports that 69 of these Camaros were assembled. Its rarity and distinct engine configuration are why “COPO” and “ZL1” are often associated—but they do not mean the same thing.

Other COPO cars: the iron-block L72 427

Other 1969 COPO Camaros used an iron-block 427 L72. These are COPO cars, but they are not ZL1s. Chevrolet’s account of one iron-block example describes an automatic-transmission car and reports 193 factory automatic COPOs. That figure refers to automatic COPOs, a subset that should not be confused with the 69 ZL1 cars.

COPO orders were not widely understood when the cars were new. Chevrolet historian Dan Hodgdon’s 2023 account quotes Bill Martens, then recently retired as Chevrolet Performance’s Associate Marketing Manager: “In ’69, you have to appreciate that our communication was much more limited; the population did not know about COPO cars until after the fact.”

How is a modern COPO Camaro different?

Chevrolet’s modern COPO Camaro program began deliveries in 2012, 43 years after the original 1969 orders. These later cars were built for drag racing and used different engine combinations over the program’s run; they are not simply newer versions of the original road-going collector cars. In its March 11, 2024 history, Chevrolet said the modern program had reached its finish line, while support for existing cars—including parts and other support—would continue.

The distinction matters when interpreting older descriptions or advertisements. Chevrolet’s announcement for the 2022 COPO Camaro said that particular car was sold as a Chevrolet Performance part and could not be registered for street use. That is a statement about the 2022 model, not evidence that a current COPO is available to order or that every car called a COPO Camaro has the same specifications or use restrictions.

What are COPO Camaros worth today?

There is no single reliable price for every COPO Camaro. A live Hagerty valuation page, accessed October 5, 2026, showed an $89,000 average sale price and listed a $77,700 Bring a Trailer sale dated September 25, 2026. Those are time-specific guide and sale-page figures, not an appraisal of any particular car.

Two Mecum results illustrate how much individual sales can differ. The amounts below are completed auction sales of different cars, not a current price range for all COPOs.

Hagerty valuation page, accessed October 5, 2026 $89,000 average sale price A snapshot of the guide page, not a vehicle-specific appraisal.
Bring a Trailer sale reported on Hagerty’s COPO page, September 25, 2026 $77,700 A dated result for one car, not a universal value.
Mecum, Kissimmee, January 13, 2018 $214,500 One 1969 COPO Camaro sale; historical, not a current comparable by itself.
Mecum, Phoenix, March 16, 2019 $132,000 A different 1969 COPO Camaro sale; historical, not a current comparable by itself.

These figures come from different sources, dates and cars. The Mecum prices are old auction results, while the Hagerty average and listed sale are page snapshots accessed October 5, 2026. None establishes a comprehensive current transaction range for every 1969 COPO configuration, and a guide average should not be treated as a guaranteed selling price.

What should you check when valuing a specific car?

Compare the exact car with completed sales of genuinely comparable cars, rather than relying on the COPO label alone. The cited listings describe particular engines, transmissions, documentation and restoration work; those details can make two cars with the same broad model description poor comparables.

  • Interactive Features – Includes opening doors, hood, and trunk for dynamic display and play possibilities.
  • Premium Diecast Construction – Built with high-quality diecast metal and free-rolling rubber tires for durability and a premium feel.
  • Jada Toys – Known for delivering screen-accurate, Hollywood-inspired diecast collectibles of unmatched quality.
  • Identity and configuration: establish whether the car is a COPO and determine which engine and transmission configuration it has. Do not assume a COPO is a ZL1.
  • Documentation and provenance: review records supporting the car’s identity and ownership history. Gaps in history can affect a buyer’s confidence.
  • Originality and restoration: distinguish an original or unrestored car from one that has been restored, and assess the quality and documentation of the work.
  • Condition and completeness: inspect wear, damage, maintenance, title issues and included equipment. These are among the factors Hagerty identifies as relevant to value.
  • Comparable sale context: use completed sales and note the date, venue, exact variant and listing details. An asking price is not proof of what a car sold for.

The available sale records do not provide a fixed dollar adjustment for any one of these factors. A vehicle-specific appraisal requires authentication and inspection; broad guide figures and isolated auction results cannot substitute for that work.
