Whether a struck tire can be repaired depends on its puncture, internal condition, tire type, and the tire maker’s rules; a tire professional must inspect it after removing it from the wheel.
How a Stop Stick deflates a tire
Stop Stick describes its device as a tire-deflation tool for law enforcement. Its brochure says hollow, Teflon-coated quills act as valves, releasing air at a controlled rate rather than causing the sudden blowout people may associate with spikes. That is the manufacturer’s description of the design, not a guarantee that a vehicle can be driven safely afterward. Stop Stick’s product information
Tire-deflation devices generally are deployed to bring vehicle pursuits to an end. A U.S. government safety bulletin notes that their use carries risks to officers; controlled deflation should not be confused with risk-free deployment. DHS EMR-ISAC safety bulletin
Can a tire punctured by a Stop Stick be reused?
Sometimes, but the fact that a tire was punctured—or that it still appears inflated—does not establish whether it is repairable. For passenger and light-truck tires, the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA) says a repair may be considered only when the injury is in the tread area and no larger than 1/4 inch (6 mm). This is the maximum injury size in USTMA’s 2024 procedure, not a promise that a tire meeting that limit can be repaired. The tire’s condition and the manufacturer’s repair policy also matter. What a proper assessment involves
- A trained tire technician removes the tire from the wheel and inspects it internally. Damage that is not visible from outside can affect the decision.
- The injury must meet the applicable limits for its size and location. USTMA’s guidance restricts repairs to the tread area and gives 1/4 inch (6 mm) as the maximum injury size for passenger and light-truck tires.
- A repair must fill the puncture and seal the inner liner. USTMA guidance does not accept a plug alone or a patch alone as a complete repair.
- The tire maker’s rules and the tire’s overall condition must permit repair. For example, Bridgestone identifies shoulder or sidewall damage and punctures beyond its limits as reasons a tire cannot be repaired under its guidance. Bridgestone tire-repair guidance
Those criteria are for passenger and light-truck tires; they do not diagnose a particular tire or establish repair limits for every tire category. A Stop Stick puncture should be assessed by a qualified tire professional, not judged by looking at the outside of the tire. Do not use a plug kit as a substitute for inspection and an appropriate repair.
What to do after a tire is deflated
If a tire has lost most or all of its air, do not assume it is safe to keep driving. The repair guidance calls for removal and internal inspection; it does not authorize driving after a Stop Stick strike. If the vehicle cannot be moved safely, contact roadside assistance or a tire service provider.

Can the Stop Stick device itself be reused?
That is a separate question from whether the tire can be repaired. The manufacturer explicitly describes its Terminator product as reusable and reloadable, but that claim applies to Terminator and should not be assumed to cover every Stop Stick model.
