The best coolant for your ATV is the one specified in its owner’s manual for its model year. For the Honda ATV covered by the cited manual, that means Pro Honda HP Coolant or a high-quality ethylene-glycol antifreeze with corrosion inhibitors specifically recommended for aluminum engines. That Honda guidance is not a universal formula: check your own ATV’s manual before buying or mixing coolant.
How to choose coolant for your ATV
- Check the manual for your exact model and year. Follow its coolant type, inhibitor requirements, and mixing instructions. Advice for one manufacturer or model does not establish compatibility with another.
- Match the fluid to the required chemistry. If the manual calls for ethylene-glycol antifreeze with corrosion inhibitors for aluminum engines, confirm the product label explicitly says it meets those requirements. For the cited Honda ATV, the manual warns that silicate inhibitors may cause premature water-pump seal wear or radiator-passage blockage.
- Check whether it is premixed or concentrated. Honda HP Coolant is sold as a ready-to-use 50/50 blend. Other products may be concentrate and require dilution; follow the ATV manual and product directions rather than assuming the same ratio applies to every model.
- Do not choose by color alone. Coolant color is not proof that its chemistry or approvals match your ATV.
The Honda owner manual recommends Pro Honda HP Coolant or an equivalent high-quality ethylene-glycol antifreeze with corrosion-protection inhibitors specifically recommended for aluminum engines. Honda says its coolant was developed for use in aluminum engines. Honda Powersports coolant information; Honda ATV owner manual.
Premix or concentrate: what to check
A ready-to-use premix avoids measuring and dilution, but it still must meet the ATV manual’s requirements. Concentrate must be mixed at the specified ratio with the water type named in the manual. For the cited Honda ATV, the manual specifies distilled water for mixing, says its factory 50/50 solution is suitable for most operating temperatures, and warns that antifreeze concentration below 40% does not provide proper corrosion protection. These are Honda specifications, not universal figures for every ATV.
That same manual warns against mineral-rich or salty water. If your ATV’s manual specifies a different coolant, ratio, or preparation method, use those instructions instead.

Why model-specific instructions matter
Manuals can agree on broad principles while differing in details. A reproduction of the 2019 Yamaha YFZ450 manual calls for ethylene-glycol antifreeze with corrosion inhibitors for aluminum engines and, when genuine Yamaha coolant is unavailable, a 1:1 mix with distilled water. A reproduction of a Can-Am Outlander 400 series manual calls for ethylene-glycol antifreeze for internal-combustion aluminum engines and a 50/50 mix with distilled water. These are examples for those specific manuals, not instructions for other Yamaha or Can-Am ATVs.

- ✅ EASY TO USE - Engine Ice Hi-Performance SXS/ATV Coolant + Antifreeze provides superior heat dispersion allowing you to maximize horsepower and performance. Easy to Use – Premixed with deionized water for out-of-the-bottle use.
- ✅ STOP LOSING PERFORMANCE - Engineered to keep your operating temperatures at optimum performance to not lose power through excess heat; Engine Ice is safe for vehicles over all types of terrain and offers superior heat reduction vs. competitive products as shown in independent lab testing..
- ✅ ADVANCED FORMULATION WITH OAT TECHNOLOGY - Product contains no ethylene glycol, uses propylene glycol to reduce operating temperatures more than other coolants
Check coolant safely and respond to repeated loss
- Check the coolant level only when the engine is cold, following the location and procedure in your manual.
- Never remove a radiator cap while the engine is hot; pressurized coolant can cause serious burns.
- If the ATV repeatedly needs coolant, investigate for a leak or another cooling-system or engine problem instead of treating regular top-ups as normal.
The Yamaha and Can-Am manual reproductions both specify checking coolant when cold; the Can-Am manual also warns against removing a hot radiator cap and says frequent coolant requirements may indicate leaks or engine problems.

- Exact compatibility with your ATV’s model-year manual
- Required base fluid and inhibitor chemistry, including aluminum-engine wording where specified
- Premixed or concentrate format, plus the correct dilution ratio if needed
- Manufacturer approval or equivalent wording required by the manual
No single coolant formula is established as compatible with every ATV, model year, market, or modified cooling system. Use your manual—not a generic color chart or another ATV owner’s recommendation—as the deciding reference.
