Together, they determine an engine’s swept displacement. They influence design and packaging, but neither dimension alone tells you how much horsepower or torque an engine will make.
What do bore and stroke mean?
Bore measures the inside diameter of a cylinder. Stroke measures how far the piston moves between its top and bottom positions. Each piston sweeps a volume as it moves; the combined swept volumes of all cylinders make up the engine’s displacement.
That is swept displacement, not necessarily the full volume above a piston at its lowest position: combustion-chamber space is a separate part of the cylinder’s total volume.
How do bore and stroke determine displacement?
For a conventional piston engine, calculate the swept displacement of one cylinder as the area of its circular bore multiplied by stroke. Multiply by the number of cylinders to get total swept displacement:

Total swept displacement = cylinder count × π/4 × bore² × stroke
Use consistent units. With bore and stroke measured in centimeters, the result is cubic centimeters (cc); 1,000 cc equals 1 liter. Because bore is squared in the formula, a proportional increase in bore changes geometric displacement more than the same proportional increase in stroke. That is a mathematical relationship, not a prediction that a wider-bore engine will produce more power.

Worked example
Suppose a four-cylinder engine has a 10-cm bore and an 8-cm stroke. One cylinder sweeps π/4 × 10² × 8, or about 628 cc. Four cylinders sweep about 2,513 cc, equivalent to about 2.51 liters. This calculation describes displacement only; it does not calculate horsepower or torque.
What do undersquare and oversquare mean?
These terms compare bore with stroke:
- Undersquare: stroke is longer than bore.
- Oversquare: bore is larger than stroke.
- Square: bore and stroke are equal.
They describe dimensions, not quality. Engine designers choose a bore-to-stroke relationship along with packaging, combustion-chamber design, valve size, airflow and the intended operating-speed range. There is no universal rule that one layout is better or that an undersquare engine must make more torque.

How can the dimensions influence engine design?
Bore and stroke are part of a set of linked design choices. A small-bore, long-stroke layout can support a compact combustion chamber and shorter flame travel, as discussed in a 2015 Car and Driver technical feature. A longer stroke can also require more engine height and may trade against very high engine speeds. These are design tendencies, not guaranteed outcomes for every engine.
For a specific historical example, a 2018 Car and Driver article on Mercedes-Benz’s M256 inline-six gives its bore as 83.0 mm and its stroke as 92.4 mm, making it undersquare. The article connects its narrower bore to tighter bore-center spacing and a shorter overall engine, and describes a compact chamber and reduced heat loss as design aims. These figures describe that engine, not a current-market recommendation.

A 2015 Car and Driver feature reported an 82-mm bore and 94.6-mm stroke for BMW’s then-new TwinPower Turbo engine family. It discussed modular design and packaging and combustion reasoning; those measurements show one manufacturer’s design choice, not a universal output formula.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does a longer stroke mean more torque?
Not by itself. A longer stroke changes the engine’s geometry, but the available evidence does not establish a universal amount of torque or horsepower gained from a given stroke change. Actual output depends on the whole engine and on the speed at which it operates.

For a useful comparison, consider the Car and Driver comparison of BMW’s N63 and S63 4.4-liter V-8s. It reports that both use the same bore and stroke, yet gives 445 hp for the 2018 X5 version and 617 hp for the 2019 M5 Competition. The article also describes differences in turbochargers, cooling, oiling and other components. The example shows why bore and stroke cannot, on their own, explain an engine’s rated output.
What should you compare when evaluating engines?
Use bore and stroke as part of the specification, not as a performance score. For a meaningful comparison, check:
- Total displacement and cylinder count.
- Bore-to-stroke relationship.
- Rated horsepower and torque, including the engine speeds at which those figures are reached.
- Whether the engine is naturally aspirated or turbocharged/supercharged.
- Valve configuration, intake and exhaust breathing, fuel delivery and calibration.
- The engine’s application and model year.
Two engines with the same displacement—or even the same bore and stroke—can have different outputs because their supporting designs and operating conditions differ. Bore and stroke explain part of how an engine is built; they do not replace the rest of its specification.
