BMW codes such as E12, E28, F30 and G20 are shorthand used to identify a vehicle’s generation or development family. They are different from the customer-facing model designation, such as 520i, which tells you the series and version BMW sold. A code is a useful first clue, but it does not by itself confirm which parts fit a particular car.
How a BMW model name differs from a generation code
A designation such as 520i is a name BMW uses for a model and version. BMW dates the clear customer-facing naming structure represented by the 520i to 1972, according to its 2023 account of BMW model names: BMW Group PressClub Mexico, “La lógica detrás del nombre de un BMW”.
A code such as E12 or E28 serves a different purpose: it distinguishes a particular generation or development family within a model series. BMW’s history of the 5 Series provides a documented example: it calls the E12 the first-generation 5 Series and the E28 the second-generation 5 Series. What do the E, F and G prefixes mean?
E, F and G are familiar prefixes in BMW generation and development codes, but BMW’s cited public material does not establish a complete official derivation for this sequence or a master chronology that applies across every model line. It is therefore safest to treat a code such as F30 or G20 as an identifier, rather than assume the letter has a confirmed, literal expansion or that the prefixes form a universal generation system.

What BMW’s historical account says about F
BMW’s account of its internal project designations says that in the mid-1920s, F identified a car chassis. In that historical system, M denoted a motor, G a transmission and R a motorcycle frame. This is a specific, early project-code usage; it does not prove that every modern BMW code beginning with F has that literal meaning. Why the codes are useful—and where they fall short
Generation codes make it easier to distinguish cars that share a customer-facing series name but belong to different designs. That can clarify which version a discussion, repair guide or listing refers to. Still, a generation code alone is not a universal parts-fitment guarantee: before ordering, check the exact model year, body style, engine and market against the relevant parts listing or the vehicle’s documentation.

BMW’s naming systems can evolve
The familiar E/F/G shorthand should not be treated as an exhaustive or permanently fixed naming system. In a 28 February 2024 announcement, BMW described Neue Klasse as the start of a new model generation and said rollout was planned from 2025. That was a plan stated in 2024, not confirmation here of when individual vehicles arrived or proof that every BMW generation follows the E/F/G pattern.
