Those black dots are part of the windshield’s baked-on ceramic frit—the black perimeter band and its fading dot matrix. The solid band protects the polyurethane adhesive that bonds the windshield to the vehicle, while the graduated dots create a smoother visual transition into clear glass and help control optical distortion during manufacturing.
What the black border is called
Automotive-glass manufacturers call the black perimeter coating a ceramic frit or frit band. The smaller marks that fade toward the transparent center are the dot matrix. The frit is a black ceramic composite applied to the glass during production, not a sticker or removable window film.

Viewed from inside or outside, the perimeter normally appears as a solid black strip that transitions through progressively smaller or more widely spaced dots.

What the solid black band does
It shields the windshield bond from ultraviolet light
Windshields are bonded to the vehicle with polyurethane adhesive. Ultraviolet exposure can degrade that adhesive, so the opaque frit covers the exposed edge of the bond and helps protect its long-term performance.

It helps keep water out
The frit forms part of the sealed installation area around the glass. Along with the adhesive and correct installation, it helps prevent water from reaching the vehicle’s body opening.
It hides the adhesive bead
The adhesive is applied around the edge of the glass. The black band conceals that bead from view, giving the windshield a clean, finished border instead of leaving the bonding material visible.
Why the black band fades into dots
The fading pattern is a halftone transition rather than decoration added after installation. Large dots near the solid band gradually become smaller or sparser toward clear glass. That softens the abrupt change from opaque black to transparent glass.

The dots therefore contribute to how the finished windshield looks and how the edge is formed, rather than serving as individual sensors or indicators.
Not every dot-like mark on glass means the same thing
Some windshields also carry small markings used for manufacturing or identification. A NHTSA-hosted Nissan specification, for example, documents a production-month dot convention alongside a separate year mark and labels ceramic frit separately. That type of code is manufacturer-specific and should not be mistaken for the general perimeter dot matrix on every vehicle.
| What you see | Likely purpose | How broadly it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Solid black perimeter | Ceramic frit that protects the polyurethane bond, supports sealing, and hides adhesive | Standard windshield-edge feature |
| Graduated dots beside the band | Halftone transition that improves appearance and helps limit manufacturing-related optical deformation | Common frit design, with patterns varying by glass and vehicle |
| Small isolated codes or symbols elsewhere | Possible manufacturer, production, certification, or glass-identification marking | Depends on the vehicle and glass maker |
Are the dots tint, a sticker, or a sensor?
No. The perimeter frit is a ceramic coating fused to the glass during automotive-glass production. It is not a removable tint film and is not intended to be peeled off. The dot matrix itself is not a row of separate sensors. Cameras, rain sensors, antennas, and other equipment may be installed elsewhere on or behind the windshield, but their presence does not explain the perimeter gradient.

Can you remove or paint over the dots?
Do not scrape, sand, solvent-clean, or repaint the frit at home. Removing material can damage the glass surface, interfere with the adhesive’s protected bonding area, or leave an uneven edge. Painting over it can also compromise the installation or conceal damage that should be inspected.
If the frit is chipped, the glass is cracked near the edge, or the black band appears separated from the bonding area, have the windshield assessed by a qualified automotive-glass provider. The condition of the glass, frit, adhesive compatibility, and installation all matter to the integrity of the bonded windshield.
What to check when a windshield is replaced
A replacement should match the vehicle’s required glass specification and include a compatible frit pattern and adhesive system. Depending on the vehicle, replacement work may also require camera or sensor calibration. Ask the installer to verify:
- the glass specification is appropriate for the exact vehicle;
- the frit band and dot pattern align correctly with the body opening and mounted equipment;
- the adhesive is approved for that installation and its cure requirements are followed;
- any forward camera, rain sensor, or other windshield-mounted system is recalibrated when required; and
- the installer provides clear warranty and credential information.
OEM and aftermarket glass can differ in specification and optical characteristics, so “fits the opening” alone is not a complete quality check.
The Bottom Line
The black windshield border is ceramic frit. Its solid band protects and conceals the polyurethane bond, and its fading dots provide a controlled visual and manufacturing transition. Leave it intact, and have edge damage or windshield replacement handled by a qualified automotive-glass professional.
