In the United States, the occupation is commonly classified as Farm Equipment Mechanics and Service Technicians (O*NET-SOC 49-3041.00). It can suit people who enjoy hands-on troubleshooting, but it also involves heavy work, field calls, injury risks, and long hours during planting and harvest.
What does an agricultural service technician do?
The work begins with finding the fault, not simply replacing a part. A technician may inspect a machine, listen to its operation, review an inspection report, or ask the customer what happened. After diagnosing the problem, the technician repairs or replaces components, reassembles the equipment, and tests it.
Farm equipment mechanics and service technicians work on agricultural machinery and vehicles, including tractors, harvesters, dairy equipment, and irrigation systems. O*NET lists job titles such as Agricultural Service Technician, Farm Equipment Service Technician, Field Technician, and Tractor Mechanic. The job is distinct from agricultural and food science technician work, which focuses more on testing and research involving plants, animals, food, or agricultural processes.
Mechanical, electrical, and computer-based troubleshooting
Modern service work can involve mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and computer-based systems. Technicians may test electrical components and wiring with meters, repair engines, work on irrigation systems, maintain repair records, and travel to a farm to service equipment. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) says technicians also use diagnostic computers and equipment as well as power and machine tools.

A digital multimeter is one example of a task-related diagnostic tool: occupational task information includes electrical testing with test meters, and an agricultural equipment curriculum covers multimeter fundamentals. A meter is not a universal diagnostic solution; the appropriate tool and procedure depend on the machine and its electrical system.
How do I become a farm equipment technician?
There is no single required route. People enter through vocational or community-college training, on-the-job learning, manufacturer or dealer programs, or a combination. O*NET places the occupation in Job Zone Three, a medium-preparation category. Its national training listing displayed 113 programs when accessed, including certificate and associate-degree options; offerings and awards vary by school and region.

Vocational or college training
BLS says most workers in the broader heavy vehicle and mobile equipment service technician group have a high school diploma or equivalent. Useful high-school subjects include automotive repair, electronics, physics, and welding. Postsecondary programs in diesel technology or heavy-equipment mechanics commonly teach diagnostics and electronics. BLS describes vocational programs lasting one to two years and associate-degree programs generally taking two years.
On-the-job learning
Entry-level workers may start with less complex duties and take on more as their skills grow. BLS says workers often become fully qualified after three to four years of on-the-job training. Employers may also send technicians to manufacturer training sessions. Some manufacturers offer certifications for particular repair methods or equipment, but BLS says certification is not generally required for the occupation.

Dealer-sponsored and brand-specific programs
Manufacturer pathways can combine classroom instruction with access to equipment and dealership experience. Two examples illustrate features to compare; neither is a universal requirement, and local participation should be confirmed with the school or dealer.
| Program | What the source describes | Requirements or availability stated |
|---|---|---|
| John Deere TECH | Two-year associate-degree route with dealer sponsorship and hands-on dealership work. Training includes diesel engines, powertrains, electrical and hydraulic systems, Service Advisor diagnostics, and precision technology. | John Deere lists high-school completion, a dealer sponsor, and college admission requirements. Check the program page and local participating schools for current availability. |
| CNH Top Tech | Connects participating dealers and schools for hands-on training in mechanical, hydraulic, engine, electrical, digital, telematics, GPS, and precision systems. Qualifying coursework can lead to a Fundamentals Certification for Case IH, New Holland, and CASE products. | Participation depends on participating schools and dealers; confirm local availability directly with CNH or the institution. |
When comparing programs, check the credential and schedule, how much hands-on equipment access they provide, whether sponsorship or an internship is required, and what tuition, financial support, or tool assistance is available. Also ask about instruction across brands and local job placement. The available program descriptions do not establish that one pathway is best for every student.

What are the working conditions and demands?
Technicians work in repair shops and may travel to farms because large machines can be expensive or impractical to move. Field-service workers may drive long distances, work outdoors, and use a service truck stocked with tools and replacement parts. Shop or field work can mean handling heavy components and tools, working around dirty equipment, and holding awkward positions.
BLS identifies farm equipment mechanics and service technicians as having one of the highest injury and illness rates among occupations. Cuts, sprains, and bruises are among the common injuries it lists. The work therefore calls for attention to safe procedures as well as mechanical ability.

Hours follow the farm calendar
Hours can rise sharply when equipment must be ready for planting or harvest. During busy seasons, mechanics often work six or seven days a week for 12 hours a day; winter may bring less than full-time work. Most workers in the broader occupation work full time, and overtime is common.
Pay and employment outlook in the United States
BLS reports a median annual wage of $56,550 for Farm Equipment Mechanics and Service Technicians in May 2025. Its 2025–2035 projections show 11% employment growth and 4,500 additional jobs for that occupation. Those are U.S. occupation-specific figures, not an estimate for every local labor market.
For context, BLS reports 20,300 average annual openings over 2025–2035 for the larger combined heavy vehicle and mobile equipment service technician occupation. That openings figure includes other types of technicians and should not be read as farm-technician-only openings.
BLS links the farm-equipment outlook to increasingly complex software-driven machinery: “Agricultural production requires the use of increasingly complex software-driven farm equipment, which is expected to create strong demand for farm equipment mechanics and service technicians to maintain and to train customers in its use.”
