In August 2024, residents near a leased open-air parking lot in the city’s South of Market neighborhood reported repeated nighttime blasts from Waymo’s driverless taxis. The cars were not being honked at by impatient human drivers. They were sounding their horns at one another while reversing and maneuvering around the lot.

It was funny until it repeatedly interrupted people’s sleep. It was also a revealing example of how an autonomous vehicle can handle complicated public-road driving yet behave awkwardly in a tightly packed, unusual operating environment.
Why Waymo’s taxis were honking at each other
Waymo had leased the parking lot as a staging and storage area where vehicles could wait between passenger trips. When several cars returned at once, they had to negotiate confined spaces, reverse, and pass one another at low speed.

Waymo said the horns were being triggered by a safety feature intended to prevent low-speed collisions. In plain English, the system could sound a warning when another vehicle came too close while reversing—similar to a human driver honking at someone who was backing out without seeing approaching traffic.
That behavior can make sense on a public street. In a controlled lot filled with other Waymo vehicles, however, the same warning could activate over and over. The cars were operating close to one another, making repeated low-speed maneuvers, and apparently did not sufficiently distinguish the depot context from a situation requiring a conventional warning.
Waymo’s earlier explanations of its horn logic indicate that the vehicles can use different patterns depending on the situation. A slowly reversing vehicle approaching too closely might prompt one kind of warning, while a longer or louder signal would be reserved for a more urgent risk. The South of Market problem was therefore not simply “the cars could not drive.” It was a mismatch between a safety behavior and an environment in which many similar autonomous vehicles were repeatedly moving around each other.
A safety feature became a neighborhood noise problem
The reported disturbance began as an operational nuisance rather than a passenger-safety incident. The available reporting did not describe a collision, a public-road crash, or passengers being placed in danger. The central problem was noise coming from the fleet’s private parking area, especially during late-night and early-morning hours.
That distinction matters. It would be inaccurate to treat the incident as proof that Waymo’s vehicles were randomly malfunctioning everywhere. It is more precise to describe it as an edge case involving fleet logistics, parking-lot geometry, vehicle behavior, and the limits of the assumptions built into the horn system.
Residents had a particularly unusual problem: there was no human driver to confront. One neighbor told the Los Angeles Times that the situation initially seemed funny, but the amusement faded when the honking repeatedly disturbed sleep. A conventional noisy car might at least have a driver who could be asked to stop. Here, the vehicles were driverless, and the source of the sound was a software-controlled safety response.

The viral livestream turned a nuisance into performance art
San Francisco software engineer Sophia Tung lived near the lot and began livestreaming the vehicles as they entered, exited, paused, and maneuvered around one another. She paired the footage with music and gave the stream the wonderfully specific title “LoFi Waymo Hip Hop Radio Self Driving Taxi Depot Shenanigans to Relax/Study To.”

The stream attracted attention because it made an obscure fleet-management problem instantly understandable. Viewers could watch dozens of autonomous taxis circulate, hesitate, and occasionally honk into the night. The scene looked less like a polished transportation network and more like accidental late-night performance art.
Describing the cars as “arguing” or “confused” is entertaining, but those are metaphors—not verified technical diagnoses. A more useful interpretation is that the vehicles were engaged in awkward, repeated negotiations over space. The behavior resembled two pedestrians who keep choosing the same direction while trying to pass each other, except the pedestrians were robotaxis in a parking lot and the disagreement was punctuated by horns.
Waymo patched the software—but the timeline matters
The Los Angeles Times reported on August 12, 2024, that residents had endured frequent honking for roughly two weeks. Waymo had identified the cause and was working on a fix.
On August 13 and 14, Waymo said it had updated the software and explained that the feature was designed to prevent low-speed collisions while reversing. But the first change did not necessarily end every episode. TechCrunch reported on August 19 that an initial patch appeared not to eliminate all of the behavior, followed by another software change that Waymo said resolved the problem.

What the incident reveals about autonomous vehicles
1. Edge cases happen in the support infrastructure, too
When people discuss autonomous driving, they often focus on the public road: traffic lights, pedestrians, cyclists, construction zones, and unpredictable human drivers. The Waymo lot shows that a fleet can encounter meaningful edge cases before or after a passenger trip, in the places where vehicles wait, charge, queue, clean up, or return for service.
A parking lot may look simpler than a city street, but it can create its own challenges: narrow lanes, changing occupancy, poor visibility, tight turning spaces, vehicles entering and leaving at the same time, and many nearly identical cars following similar rules.
2. Context changes whether a safety response is appropriate
A horn is useful when it warns a nearby road user who may not know a vehicle is reversing. The same horn can become unreasonable when the nearby vehicle belongs to the same managed fleet, is operating inside a known facility, and is following coordinated low-speed procedures.
That suggests the need for environment-aware behavior. Depot software may need to know that a vehicle is inside a designated lot, identify nearby fleet vehicles, understand the lot’s boundaries and occupancy, and apply different warning rules depending on time, location, speed, and risk.
3. “Safe” and “polished” are not the same thing
The taxis’ honking was reportedly tied to collision avoidance, but a feature can be safety-oriented and still be badly calibrated for a particular context. Autonomous systems are judged not only by whether they avoid crashes, but also by whether they behave predictably, quietly, and considerately around the people who live near their operations.
That is especially important for commercial fleets. A nuisance that affects one vehicle for a few seconds can become a neighborhood-wide problem when dozens of vehicles repeat it throughout the night.

4. Mundane failures shape public trust
The footage did not show a dramatic crash. It showed something more relatable: machines doing an awkward, annoying thing at an inconvenient hour. That may be why it resonated. People do not evaluate new technology only through technical safety statistics; they also judge whether it fits into ordinary life.
A robotaxi that completes a complicated trip but repeatedly wakes nearby residents can still look unfinished. The public sees the visible behavior, not the engineering rationale behind it.
If nighttime vehicle noise is affecting your sleep
Earplugs are not a Waymo solution, and they will not necessarily block every horn or other exterior noise. But for someone dealing with recurring neighborhood or traffic disturbances, sleep earplugs may be a practical, low-cost option; effectiveness and comfort vary by product and person.
A white-noise machine can provide another sleep-oriented masking option. Noise-reducing curtains may help with some exterior sound, although “soundproof” is often an overstatement and curtains will not eliminate a nearby horn. If you are documenting a recurring disturbance for a landlord or local complaint, a decibel meter can help create a record of when and how loud the noise is. Does this mean Waymo’s entire service is unreliable?
No. The reporting concerns a specific parking-lot behavior in San Francisco in 2024. It does not establish that every Waymo ride, every vehicle, or every service area experienced the same issue.
