The 2026 U.S. list consists of the Audi A6 allroad, Audi RS 6 Avant performance, BMW M5 Touring, Mercedes-Benz E 450 4MATIC All-Terrain, Mercedes-AMG E 53 HYBRID Wagon, Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo/Cross Turismo, and Volvo V60 Cross Country.
This is a count of new-car entries in the 2026 U.S. market, not a claim that only seven vehicles sold in America have rear hatches. The count also treats the two Taycan long-roof body styles as one model line, while counting the Mercedes E 450 and AMG E 53 separately because they have distinct listings, powertrains, prices, and performance specifications.

The 7 station wagons still sold new in America
The surviving wagons are no longer a broad mainstream category. They are concentrated in premium luxury, high-performance, and electric vehicles, with starting prices ranging from the low-$50,000s to well above $100,000. The figures below are U.S. starting MSRPs before taxes, registration, options, destination charges, dealer fees, and other costs unless otherwise noted.

Availability is not equal across the list. The Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche models are expensive specialty vehicles that may depend on dealer allocation and configuration. Volvo’s V60 Cross Country is listed in the U.S. but is explicitly inventory-dependent, so a model being in the catalog does not mean every retailer has one in stock.

1. Volvo V60 Cross Country: the practical entry point
The 2026 Volvo V60 Cross Country is the closest thing this market has to an accessible, traditional luxury wagon. Volvo lists it as a midsize luxury wagon with standard all-wheel drive, a starting price of $53,595, 247 horsepower, 26 mpg combined, and a claimed 0-to-60-mph time of 6.6 seconds.
Its appeal is not explosive acceleration. The V60 Cross Country is for buyers who want a lower, more carlike alternative to a compact or midsize crossover, but still want all-weather traction and a useful cargo area. It also retains the visual and practical identity that many people associate with a classic modern wagon: a long roof, a relatively low body, and a rear cargo compartment that is easier to load than a sedan trunk.
Volvo’s U.S. inventory system shows 2026 V60 Cross Country Plus and Ultra vehicles marked available at retailers, but displayed MSRPs vary with equipment. Availability is limited and dealer-dependent. There has also been reporting that Volvo plans to end U.S. wagon sales after the 2026 model year. That makes “last chance” a reasonable description of the buying situation, but the exact retail cutoff should not be treated as confirmed unless Volvo announces it directly.
2. Audi A6 allroad: the restrained luxury wagon
The 2026 Audi A6 allroad starts at $73,100. It uses a 3.0-liter V6 producing 335 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, with standard quattro all-wheel drive. Audi claims a 5.4-second 0-to-60-mph time and lists 30.0 cubic feet of cargo capacity behind the rear seats.
The A6 allroad is a raised wagon rather than a disguised SUV. Roof rails, added body cladding, increased ride height, folding rear seatbacks, and standard all-wheel drive give it more flexibility for winter driving, road trips, and bulky gear than a conventional sedan. Its emphasis is quiet long-distance comfort and cargo usability rather than the theatrical performance of the RS 6 or M5 Touring.
Audi’s 2026 A6-family announcement says the A6 allroad carries over unchanged for the model year, while confirming the $73,100 starting MSRP and 335-hp output. It is a strong choice for the buyer who wants a premium wagon that feels understated and useful every day.
3. Mercedes-Benz E 450 4MATIC All-Terrain: the comfort-and-clearance choice
The 2026 Mercedes-Benz E 450 4MATIC All-Terrain starts at $78,300. Its 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six uses mild-hybrid assistance to produce 375 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. Mercedes lists a 4.6-second 0-to-60-mph time.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Like the Audi A6 allroad, the E 450 adds extra ride height and rugged-looking exterior treatment without abandoning the wagon format. Mercedes describes it as an E-Class wagon with an SUV-inspired All-Terrain stance and adaptive AIRMATIC suspension. The result is aimed at buyers who prioritize a smooth, quiet, comfortable cabin and confident all-weather travel over maximum track ability.
The E 450 occupies an important middle ground. It is more distinctive and lower-slung than an SUV, but its raised stance and all-wheel-drive system make it less intimidating for buyers who regularly encounter snow, rough roads, or steep driveways. It is also separate from the AMG E 53 in this count because Mercedes lists the two as different models with different powertrains and prices.
4. Mercedes-AMG E 53 HYBRID Wagon: electrified performance without giving up the wagon body
The 2026 Mercedes-AMG E 53 HYBRID Wagon starts at $93,350. It combines an AMG-enhanced 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with a 120-kW electric motor for 577 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of combined torque. Mercedes claims a 4.0-second 0-to-60-mph time, lists 33.1 to 64.6 cubic feet of cargo capacity, and gives it an EPA-estimated electric range of up to 41 miles.
That powertrain gives the E 53 a different mission from the conventional E 450. Short commutes and errands can potentially be handled using electric power, while the gasoline engine and high system output preserve long-distance flexibility and quick acceleration. The plug-in-hybrid layout also makes home charging and access to charging at work more relevant to the ownership decision than it is for the mild-hybrid E 450.
The E 53 is the electrified performance alternative to the V8-powered Audi RS 6 Avant performance and the hybrid-assisted BMW M5 Touring. It is not simply an equipment package for the E 450; Mercedes gives it a separate model listing, powertrain, price, and performance specification, which is why it counts as its own entry here.
5. Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo and Cross Turismo: one electric wagon model line
Porsche still offers long-roof Taycan variants in the United States. The Sport Turismo is the lower, more road-focused wagon body. The Cross Turismo has a raised profile and a more all-terrain-oriented design, making it the more versatile choice for buyers who value additional visual toughness and rough-road practicality.
Both belong to the same electric Taycan model family, so they are counted as one wagon entry rather than two. Counting them separately would inflate the list simply because Porsche offers two body treatments on the same basic performance platform.

The Taycan is the clearest electric interpretation of the modern performance wagon. It replaces the sound and fuel-stop rhythm of the Audi RS 6 or BMW M5 Touring with instant electric response and a lower-emission powertrain. Sport Turismo buyers are choosing the sleeker road-car concept; Cross Turismo buyers are accepting a more upright, rugged presentation in exchange for added versatility.

Porsche’s U.S. model materials identify the Sport Turismo and Cross Turismo body variants, and Porsche’s U.S. inventory search shows new 2026 Cross Turismo examples available through dealers. Exact pricing varies considerably by version and equipment, and Porsche’s public model pages can change between model years and configurations. Check the active Porsche configurator and local inventory for the exact version, equipment, and current MSRP before treating any Taycan price as definitive.
6. BMW M5 Touring: the one-car solution for enthusiasts
The 2026 BMW M5 Touring starts at $125,300 in the United States. BMW describes it as a high-performance wagon using the same basic powertrain concept as the M5 sedan: a 4.4-liter V8 combustion engine, a high-performance electric motor, and M xDrive all-wheel drive. Current U.S. model descriptions put output above 700 horsepower, with acceleration in the mid-three-second range, although the exact figure can depend on the selected version and the current configurator’s specifications.
The M5 Touring is aimed at the buyer who refuses to choose between a family vehicle and a serious performance car. Its long roof and rear cargo area make it more useful for passengers, luggage, sports equipment, or a dog than a conventional high-performance sedan, while the M powertrain gives it the pace expected from the M5 name.
It is not a value alternative to an SUV. The starting price, performance hardware, tire costs, insurance, and potential options place it firmly in the enthusiast-luxury category. Its advantage is concentration: one vehicle can serve as a daily driver, highway cruiser, family car, and high-performance machine.
7. Audi RS 6 Avant performance: the V8 super-wagon
The 2026 Audi RS 6 Avant performance starts at $130,700. Audi lists 621 horsepower, 627 lb-ft of torque, standard quattro all-wheel drive, and a claimed 0-to-60-mph time of 3.3 seconds.
This is the headline enthusiast car in the group. The RS 6 combines a V8-powered performance drivetrain with the cargo-friendly Avant body, producing the unusual combination of supercar acceleration, all-weather traction, and substantial rear utility. It is still a wagon in shape and function, not a crossover with a sloping roof.
Audi’s 2026 A6-family release says the RS 6 Avant performance carries over essentially unchanged, with blue-painted brake calipers newly available for the model year. Its price and running costs make it a niche purchase, but its basic proposition is unusually clear: maximum performance in a body that remains useful after the fun ends.
Why the 2026 Subaru Outback is not included
The 2026 Subaru Outback is the most important borderline case. It still has a long roof, a large rear hatch, standard all-wheel drive, and the kind of cargo usefulness that historically made the Outback a wagon reference point. But Subaru’s current U.S. materials call the redesigned vehicle an “AWD midsize SUV,” and Subaru has described the change as a move from a “tall station wagon” to a full-fledged SUV.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUnder the strict definition used here, that makes the Outback an exclusion based on classification—not a claim that it suddenly lost its wagon-like utility. Buyers shopping for practical cargo space should still consider it; readers asking specifically for a sedan-derived station wagon should not count it in the seven.
Other vehicles that do not make the strict wagon list
- Toyota Crown Signia: excluded because its proportions and positioning are closer to a crossover than to a conventional sedan-derived station wagon.
- Toyota bZ Woodland: excluded as a stretched crossover rather than a low-roof station wagon.
- Subaru Trailseeker: also falls closer to the crossover category in body proportions and engineering.
- Volvo V90 Cross Country: not part of the current researched U.S. wagon lineup. Current availability supports the V60 Cross Country rather than a new V90 listing.
- MINI Clubman: discontinued before the 2026 snapshot and not a current new-car option.
The dividing line is not always visually perfect. Modern wagons often have raised suspensions, plastic cladding, tall seating positions, and SUV-inspired styling. The useful rule is to count the vehicles whose underlying design remains a low-roof, long-roof car rather than simply counting every crossover with a hatch.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose among the seven
Choose the Volvo V60 Cross Country if price and practicality matter most
At $53,595, the V60 Cross Country is the entry point. It is the most sensible choice for someone who wants a traditional wagon shape, standard all-wheel drive, and reasonable performance without entering six-figure territory. Its main drawback is availability: shoppers may need to search multiple retailers, and equipment can push the actual price higher.
Choose the Audi A6 allroad or Mercedes E 450 for relaxed luxury
The Audi and Mercedes are the practical luxury choices. The A6 allroad has a clearly stated 30.0-cubic-foot cargo capacity behind the rear seats and a more restrained character. The E 450 emphasizes Mercedes comfort, adaptive AIRMATIC suspension, and its All-Terrain stance. Compare seating comfort, cargo dimensions, local dealer support, and options rather than choosing on horsepower alone.

The E 53 is the relevant choice for buyers who can charge at home or work and want short-trip electric capability without moving to a fully electric car. Its up-to-41-mile EPA-estimated electric range is a major differentiator, but real-world electric distance varies with temperature, speed, terrain, climate-control use, and driving style.

Choose the Taycan if you want an all-electric performance wagon
The Taycan is the only fully electric wagon model line in this group. The Sport Turismo is the cleaner road-focused choice, while the Cross Turismo is the better fit for buyers who prefer a raised, more versatile profile. Confirm the exact battery, motor, charging, range, price, and equipment figures for the specific Taycan version; those details vary substantially across the lineup.
Choose the BMW M5 Touring or Audi RS 6 if performance is the priority
The M5 Touring and RS 6 Avant performance are for buyers who want extraordinary acceleration without surrendering wagon utility. The BMW uses a V8-and-electric-motor performance system and M xDrive; the Audi delivers 621 hp and 627 lb-ft through a V8-powered quattro setup. The choice will come down to driving character, cabin and chassis preferences, dealer experience, and whether the BMW’s hybrid system or Audi’s established RS formula better suits your use.
What “still on sale” really means
All seven appear in the researched 2026 U.S. market snapshot, but “on sale” does not mean “widely stocked.” A vehicle can remain listed by a manufacturer while being difficult to locate in a particular state. This is especially relevant to the Volvo V60 Cross Country and to highly optioned luxury-performance cars, which may be allocation-dependent.
Before placing a deposit, verify four things with the manufacturer or retailer:
- Model year: Confirm that the vehicle is a 2026 model and not leftover prior-year inventory.
- Exact body style: A dealer’s search results may group wagons, hatchbacks, crossovers, and SUVs together.
- Final equipment and MSRP: Options, packages, destination charges, and dealer fees can materially change the advertised starting price.
- Actual availability: Ask whether the car is physically at the retailer, in transit, allocated but unbuilt, or merely orderable.
Protecting and expanding wagon cargo space
One of the wagon’s practical advantages is a long, accessible cargo floor. If you regularly carry muddy equipment, pets, groceries, sports gear, or camping supplies, a station wagon cargo liner can be a sensible ownership accessory. Do not assume a generic liner fits all seven vehicles: verify the make, model, body style, trim, seat configuration, and model year before purchasing. Cargo-floor shapes, seatback angles, underfloor storage, and hybrid or EV hardware can all affect fitment.
Roof rails on some wagons can also support additional storage for road trips or winter equipment, but rails do not guarantee that every roof rack or cargo box is compatible. Check the vehicle’s roof-load limits, the approved mounting system, clearance around the liftgate, and the manufacturer’s instructions before carrying heavy or bulky items.
What the seven-car count says about the market
The surviving U.S. wagon market has become overwhelmingly premium and enthusiast-oriented. Its three broad groups are:
- Practical luxury wagons: Audi A6 allroad, Mercedes-Benz E 450 4MATIC All-Terrain, and Volvo V60 Cross Country.
- Extreme performance wagons: Audi RS 6 Avant performance, BMW M5 Touring, and Mercedes-AMG E 53 HYBRID Wagon.
- Electric performance wagons: Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo/Cross Turismo.
Affordable mainstream wagons have largely disappeared because buyers have moved toward crossovers and SUVs, while manufacturers can often charge more for the wagons that remain. The current survivors appeal either to buyers who specifically value the lower, longer car shape or to enthusiasts who want a performance vehicle with more everyday utility than a coupe or sedan.
That is why the list is both small and expensive. The market has not eliminated the wagon entirely; it has turned the wagon into a premium niche product.

Are the Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo and Cross Turismo two different wagons?
They are two long-roof body styles in the Taycan family. Sport Turismo is lower and more road-focused; Cross Turismo is raised and more all-terrain-oriented. This count treats them as one model line.
Are these wagons widely available across the United States?
No. They are current U.S. market entries, but availability varies by model, retailer, allocation, and region. The Volvo V60 Cross Country is specifically inventory-dependent, and high-performance luxury models may require a special order or a search across multiple dealers.
The Bottom Line
Under a strict definition, seven new station-wagon model entries remain in the 2026 U.S. market. The Volvo V60 Cross Country is the practical value choice; the Audi A6 allroad and Mercedes E 450 are the comfort-focused options; the AMG E 53 and Porsche Taycan bring electrification; and the BMW M5 Touring and Audi RS 6 Avant performance deliver supercar-level pace. The Subaru Outback remains a useful long-roof vehicle, but Subaru now classifies it as an SUV, so it is not part of this seven-car count.
