How Waymo’s Singapore rollout is expected to work
The announcement describes distinct preparation and service phases. Arrival of the vehicles and local testing do not mean that driverless rides will be available to the public.

What is known about the 2028 launch—and what is not
Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) said on September 18, 2026, that Waymo aims to launch commercial ride-hailing in 2028. Waymo announced its intention the day before, describing the future service as fully autonomous, all-electric ride-hailing booked through the Waymo app. These are announced plans, not a guarantee of service on a particular date. The announcements do not specify a final service area, fares, rider eligibility, or an opening day within 2028. They also do not establish that the service will cover all of Singapore. These details should not be assumed from the target year alone. Waymo’s Singapore page
Regulatory approval is part of the path to service
LTA says it will work with Waymo to ensure deployment meets safety and regulatory requirements. Waymo says it will work with the Ministry of Transport (MOT), LTA, and other local authorities to secure necessary approvals; the official material does not give a complete list of those approvals or a final readiness test for commercial launch. On May 4, 2026, MOT opened a public consultation on proposed legislation for autonomous vehicles. The proposed framework was intended to clarify safety regulation, liability, insurance, and enforcement, building on the existing AV sandbox and international practices. That release described proposals and consultation; it should not be read as proof that every proposed measure became law or as a complete statement of the requirements for Waymo’s planned service. What Waymo’s safety figures do—and do not—show
Waymo cited figures about its existing operations in a 2026 company announcement: more than 20 million fully autonomous rides, more than 300 million fully autonomous kilometres, and a claimed 94% reduction in injury-causing crashes compared with human drivers in the US cities where it operates fully autonomously. Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow described autonomous vehicles as a way to add capacity to the taxi and private-hire fleet and potentially fill service gaps, including trips to places human drivers may be less willing to serve and rides after public transport stops operating. That is the government’s rationale for exploring the technology, not a measured outcome from Waymo’s future Singapore service. LTA’s announcement
