The company is preparing additional markets—including Denver, Las Vegas, San Diego, and Tampa—but an announced city is not necessarily a city where the public can already hail a paid, fully driverless ride.
That distinction matters. Waymo’s rollout can involve manual mapping, autonomous testing with a trained specialist, employee-only driverless rides, invitation-only public access, or broadly available public service. This guide separates those stages and explains how the service works, what riders need to bring, how Waymo describes its safety record, and which expansion announcements are still plans rather than current availability.
Information current to August 12, 2026. Waymo’s service boundaries, invitation requirements, and rollout stages can change quickly, so the app remains the final check for a particular pickup and destination.
Where can you ride a Waymo robotaxi now?
Waymo’s official service-area listing identifies nine directly operated areas. It says rides are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, subject to operational limitations. Availability is geofenced: being somewhere in the same metropolitan region does not guarantee that Waymo will serve your street, suburb, airport, venue, or destination.

Waymo’s February 24 expansion announcement described Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Orlando as a four-market launch that brought its commercial metro-area total to 10 at that time. The current service-area page presents nine directly operated areas, while Austin and Atlanta are separately identified as Uber-distributed markets. Those figures are not necessarily contradictory: companies and news reports may count metro areas, direct markets, partner markets, or rollout stages differently. For a rider, the useful question is not the headline city count but whether the app accepts a trip from the specific location to the specific destination.
What does “Waymo is in a city” actually mean?
Expansion announcements often compress several very different milestones into one phrase. Waymo’s rollout generally follows a progression like this:
- Mapping and validation: Waymo collects local road information and manually validates routes, traffic patterns, construction, pickup locations, and other conditions.
- Autonomous testing with a trained specialist: The vehicle drives itself, but a trained specialist is present as part of the testing or preparation process.
- Employee-only driverless rides: Employees can ride without a specialist in the vehicle while Waymo evaluates the service before opening it more broadly.
- Invitation-only public access: Selected members of the public can request rides, but access may require an invitation or code and may cover only part of the planned service area.
- Broader public service: Ordinary riders can request paid trips, subject to geofencing, capacity, operational restrictions, and temporary suspensions.
A city can therefore appear in a Waymo announcement long before a resident can open an app and book a ride. “Testing in Denver,” “employees riding in San Diego,” and “public Waymo service in Nashville” describe different points on the rollout ladder.
Which cities are coming next?
Denver, Las Vegas, San Diego, and Tampa
In an April 2026 update, Waymo said it was preparing fully autonomous operations in Denver, Las Vegas, San Diego, and Tampa. The initial rider-only operations were for employees, with public access expected later. The Los Angeles Times reported that employee rides had begun in San Diego and that public rides were expected later in 2026; the other three cities were also part of the announced expansion.

As of the research date, these four cities should be described as progressing toward public service—not as established public driverless robotaxi markets. A later Waymo launch notice or an active booking option would be needed to confirm a change in status.
Other announced U.S. markets
Waymo has also announced groundwork, regulatory engagement, testing, or future intentions involving:
- Charlotte
- Chicago
- Boston
- Baltimore
- Philadelphia
- Pittsburgh
- St. Louis
- Minneapolis
- New Orleans
- New York
- Washington, D.C.
These locations should not be presented as active public Waymo robotaxi markets based on the announcements available by August 12, 2026. Their positions differ:
- Charlotte and Chicago were described as early expansion efforts.
- Boston needs Massachusetts to establish a legal path for fully autonomous vehicles before public rides can begin.
- Baltimore needs a regulatory path.
- Philadelphia was still associated with testing.
- Pittsburgh and St. Louis were future-service announcements rather than proof of current public availability.
- Minneapolis, New Orleans, New York, and Washington, D.C. were among locations connected to groundwork or future intentions, not confirmed public driverless service.
London is a separate international track
Waymo began autonomous driving in London in April 2026 with trained specialists behind the wheel. The company said it had completed closed-course testing and tens of thousands of miles of local professional driving, and that it was working toward fully autonomous ride-hailing in London during 2026.

That announcement did not establish that public, driverless rides were already available in London. It is a useful example of why “autonomous driving has begun” and “the public can book an unmanned robotaxi” are not interchangeable statements.
How the Waymo Driver works
Waymo’s sixth-generation Driver is designed as a lower-cost, more scalable system that can be used across multiple vehicle platforms and in a wider range of environments, including harsh winter conditions. Its sensor suite combines:
- High-resolution cameras for visual information about lanes, signs, lights, road users, and the surrounding environment.
- Imaging radar to help detect and track objects and conditions beyond what cameras alone can reliably provide.
- Lidar to create detailed three-dimensional information about the vehicle’s surroundings.
Waymo says the vehicle uses a detailed 3D map to understand its position and route, while its sensors continuously scan vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians, and other road users. The driving decisions are made onboard by the automated driving system.
Remote assistance is not remote driving
Waymo also uses remote assistance for particular situations or rider requests. The distinction is important: remote assistance does not mean that a person continuously monitors every car or manually drives a vehicle from a control room.
According to Waymo’s explanation, the automated system can request information in a specific situation—for example, when it needs additional context about an unusual road condition. The system can then accept or reject the advice. The remote team supplies information; it does not take over as a constantly connected remote chauffeur.
The Ojai vehicle: a new platform, not the whole fleet
Waymo introduced its Ojai vehicle to initial riders in June 2026. Ojai is operated by the sixth-generation Waymo Driver and was designed specifically for autonomous ride-hailing rather than being simply a conventional car adapted for the job.
Waymo highlights several rider-oriented and accessibility features, including:
- Embedded braille
- Screen-reader compatibility
- A support handle integrated into the seat
The vehicle was initially associated with Phoenix, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, with additional cities expected. It does not replace every Jaguar or other vehicle in Waymo’s fleet. Waymo continues to operate a mixed fleet and multiple vehicle generations as it expands.

How to book a Waymo ride
In a directly operated service area, eligible riders request a trip through the Waymo app. In Austin and Atlanta, the ride is available through Uber. That difference affects the booking channel and should not be described as though every market has the same operating model.
- Check the service channel. Use the Waymo app in a direct-service area, or Uber in Austin and Atlanta.
- Enter the pickup and destination. The trip must remain inside the active service area and the vehicle’s permitted operating boundaries.
- Review the displayed price. Waymo says prices are shown before booking and vary according to trip factors.
- Confirm the ride only if the route works for your group. Check the passenger limit, child-restraint requirements, pickup instructions, and destination access before requesting.
Even in a listed service area, a trip may not be available. Waymo says rides can be unavailable because of safety considerations, technical problems, severe weather, or public-health issues. Service may also be limited at particular times or locations.
Passenger limits and child-seat rules
A Waymo vehicle permits a maximum of four riders. If children need a car seat or booster seat, the accompanying adult must bring and install it. Waymo does not provide child restraints.

Choose a restraint appropriate for the child’s size and vehicle use, follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions, and comply with the law where the ride takes place. Do not assume that a particular portable seat is suitable merely because it is marketed for travel.
What does Waymo say about safety?
Waymo reports a substantial safety advantage in its own analyses, but the figures need to be read with their scope and attribution intact. In its April 2026 London update, the company said that across 170 million U.S. fully autonomous miles, the Waymo Driver was involved in 92% fewer crashes causing serious or fatal injuries than human drivers in the places where it operates.
That is a company-reported analysis, not an independent universal verdict that applies to every road, weather condition, vehicle generation, or future market. The comparison is geographically limited to Waymo’s operating areas and depends on Waymo’s methodology and comparison population.
Waymo’s published blog index also reported more than 220 million fully autonomous miles through the end of March 2026, along with more than four million autonomous miles per week. Those mileage figures should not be casually substituted for the 170-million-mile safety-analysis figure: one is presented as an overall autonomous-mileage milestone, while the other is a U.S.-specific mileage base for a particular safety comparison. They have different reporting contexts.

Why is Waymo expanding so quickly?
Waymo is trying to turn robotaxi deployment from a market-by-market experiment into a repeatable operating process. The basic strategy is:
- Map and manually validate a new market.
- Test the automated system with trained specialists.
- Run employee-only driverless rides.
- Invite selected public riders.
- Expand access and service boundaries after the system and operations are ready.
This approach explains both Waymo’s growing footprint and the gap between an announcement and a normal consumer launch. Every new city requires more than a vehicle that can navigate roads. Waymo must account for local road design, construction, weather, pickup and drop-off behavior, emergency procedures, regulations, fleet operations, charging or maintenance, and rider support.
In February 2026, Waymo said it was targeting more than one million rides per week by the end of 2026 and laying groundwork in more than 20 cities. A separate funding announcement described a $16 billion investment round aimed at supporting fleet growth, staffing, and international expansion. These are scale targets and business commitments—not guarantees that every named city will launch on a fixed schedule.

Uber in Austin and Atlanta
Uber gives Waymo a distribution channel in Austin and Atlanta. Riders in those markets use Uber to access the service, while Waymo remains the autonomous-vehicle operator. This arrangement expands consumer access without making Austin and Atlanta identical to markets where Waymo handles the request directly through its own app.
DoorDash autonomous delivery in Phoenix
Waymo has also launched autonomous delivery through DoorDash in Metro Phoenix. The initial program covers Standard deliveries from participating DashMart locations. Customers receive instructions through the DoorDash app and use the app to unlock the vehicle’s trunk. This is a delivery deployment, not a passenger robotaxi service and not evidence that every DoorDash order in Phoenix is autonomous.
Waze and pothole detection
Waymo announced a Waze partnership focused on identifying and helping cities address potholes. The five initial markets are the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Austin, and Atlanta. This is an infrastructure and civic-technology use case: it shows how autonomous vehicles can generate road-condition information, but it is not a consumer accessory or an additional Waymo ride-booking option.
Airports, transit, and destinations
Waymo’s service-area growth also creates potential opportunities for airport, transit, stadium, and event-destination partnerships. Those are business-development possibilities rather than confirmed affiliate programs or proof that every airport in a Waymo market is currently served. Airport access should always be checked as a specific pickup and drop-off question inside the active booking flow.
What should prospective riders expect?
- Check the exact trip, not just the city name. Geofencing can exclude nearby neighborhoods, airports, or destinations.
- Expect access to change. A market may move from employee rides to invitations and then to broader access, or temporarily restrict trips because of conditions.
- Bring any required child restraint. The vehicle holds up to four riders, and Waymo does not provide car seats or boosters.
- Do not confuse assistance with manual driving. Waymo says remote assistance provides information for specific situations; it is not continuous remote operation.
- Review the price before booking. The displayed fare can vary with trip factors.
- Use the correct app. Direct Waymo markets use the Waymo app; Austin and Atlanta use Uber.
The bottom line on Waymo’s expansion
Waymo has moved beyond a handful of mature robotaxi markets and is building a broader rollout system. As of August 12, 2026, the clearest consumer footprint is nine directly operated service areas plus Uber-distributed rides in Austin and Atlanta. Miami, Orlando, and Nashville have reached broad public access, while Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio began with invitation-based launches.
