Waymo generally describes these locations as markets or metropolitan service areas rather than entire incorporated cities. A city name in the list does not mean every neighborhood, road, airport, or destination is covered.

Why the count changed from 10 to 11
On February 24, 2026, Waymo announced launches in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Orlando, saying those additions brought the company to 10 commercial metro areas. That announcement is the source of the “10 cities” figure.
Nashville then entered a staged rider rollout on April 7. Miami and Orlando opened to everyone on April 15, and Nashville opened to everyone without an invite code on June 25. The Nashville public-access date is why the current official listing supports 11 markets.
Waymo also announced San Antonio International Airport service on March 31, expanded its Miami coverage by more than 50 square miles in May, and added destinations in San Jose and Campbell in the Bay Area. These updates expand individual service zones; they do not necessarily create new markets.
What “operating” actually means
For this article, a market counts when ordinary eligible riders can request a fully autonomous passenger trip in at least part of the announced service area. It should not count merely because Waymo has mapped roads, tested vehicles, offered employee rides, received approval, or announced a future launch.
There are three useful statuses:
- Publicly available: Eligible riders can request trips, subject to the operating zone, capacity, and temporary restrictions.
- Gradually adding riders: Commercial service has begun, but access is still being expanded in stages.
- Testing or coming soon: Waymo may be preparing vehicles or mapping roads, but ordinary public rides are not confirmed.
Waymo describes its rides as fully autonomous: no human driver is actively controlling the vehicle during the trip. That is different from testing with a safety operator, and it is also different from remote assistance. Waymo’s fully autonomous FAQ explains that the vehicle uses maps, sensors, and onboard software to navigate.

How to book a Waymo ride
Markets using the Waymo app
- Download the Waymo app and create or sign in to an account.
- Enter a pickup point and destination.
- Confirm that both locations fall within the eligible service area.
- Review the fare estimate shown before booking.
- Request the ride and follow the app’s pickup instructions.
- Unlock the vehicle through the app when prompted.
Waymo’s ride instructions and FAQ provide the current booking guidance. The app, rather than the city name, is the practical test of whether a specific trip is supported.
Austin and Atlanta through Uber
- Open Uber and go to Account > Settings > Ride Preferences > Autonomous Vehicles.
- Turn on the Waymo preference.
- Request an eligible UberX, Uber Green, Uber Comfort, or Uber Comfort Electric trip inside the Waymo service area.
- Accept the Waymo match if Uber offers one.
- Use Uber to unlock the vehicle and board.
The preference increases the chance of receiving a Waymo but does not guarantee one. Uber may assign a human-driven vehicle instead.
Service areas are not city limits
Waymo’s coverage consists of mapped and approved operating zones. The San Francisco market reaches beyond San Francisco proper into parts of the wider Bay Area and Silicon Valley. Phoenix covers a metropolitan territory, while Los Angeles access depends on the specific mapped zone.
Airport service also varies by market and can be added incrementally. Before planning a trip, check the live map or enter the exact pickup and destination into the appropriate app. A launch announcement does not prove that a particular neighborhood is covered.
What 24/7 service does—and does not—mean
Waymo says its service operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week in its service areas. That is not an unconditional promise that every route or vehicle is available at every moment.

Rides may be paused or restricted because of severe weather, road closures, safety incidents, technical problems, high demand, or other operational conditions. Waymo specifically lists safety, technical, weather, and related conditions as reasons service may be unavailable.

Pricing and passenger rules
There is no single national Waymo fare. The price depends on trip factors such as the route, market, timing, and demand, and Waymo shows an estimate before booking. Do not assume a Waymo ride is always cheaper or more expensive than Uber, a taxi, or another ride-hailing option; compare the live quotes for the same trip.
Waymo’s current guidance also says:
- A vehicle can carry a maximum of four total riders.
- Riders generally must be at least 18 to download the app and ride alone.
- Metro Phoenix has an exception for teen-account riders ages 14–17.
- Waymo does not provide car seats. Parents or guardians must bring and install their own.
- Wheelchair-accessible vehicle availability has market-specific limits.
Common reasons a ride may not work
- The pickup or destination is outside the approved operating zone.
- No autonomous vehicle is available at the requested time.
- An Uber request produces a human-driven vehicle rather than a Waymo.
- Weather, a road incident, or a technical issue temporarily suspends service.
- The group has more than four riders.
- A child needs a car seat that the passenger did not bring.
- The rider assumes every airport, freeway, or cross-metro route is supported.
What comes next
Waymo has described Denver, Las Vegas, San Diego, and Tampa as markets being prepared for fully autonomous operations. They should not be added to the active count unless Waymo confirms that public service has begun.
Waymo also announced Waymo Premier on June 11, 2026. It is an invite-only membership with benefits including priority status, priority pickups, and Waymo Cash back. The available announcement does not establish a verified membership price, so prospective members should check the current offer rather than rely on an assumed subscription cost.

The practical question is narrower: Is the exact pickup and destination inside the current service zone, is the market open to that rider, and is an autonomous vehicle available now?
