Yes—Elon Musk really did announce a Tesla robotaxi unveiling for August 8, 2024. But Tesla did not hold that event on the announced date. The reveal was postponed until October 10, 2024, when Tesla presented the purpose-built vehicle later called the Cybercab.
That was a vehicle unveiling, not proof that Tesla had launched a nationwide driverless taxi service. Tesla’s current materials describe limited Robotaxi rides using Model Y vehicles in selected Florida and Texas markets, while Cybercab remains a future vehicle.

What Musk actually announced
On April 5, 2024, Musk posted on X: “Tesla Robotaxi unveil on 8/8.” The announcement was genuine, but its wording was narrower than many later headlines suggested. Musk said Tesla would unveil a robotaxi; he did not establish that passengers would be able to book rides that day, that production would begin immediately, or that Tesla had approval for broad driverless commercial service.

The announcement arrived shortly after reporting that Tesla was shifting attention away from its long-discussed lower-cost electric car and toward autonomy. As a result, the August date was interpreted not only as a new-product reveal, but also as a signal about Tesla’s intended business direction: becoming more dependent on artificial intelligence, autonomous driving, and fleet-based transportation.

Was the August 8 event canceled?
It was postponed, not abandoned. Tesla did not hold the robotaxi reveal on August 8, 2024. In July, reports said the event would move to October. Musk said the extra time would allow Tesla to make improvements and incorporate a design change.
The distinction matters. Saying that Tesla “canceled its robotaxi” incorrectly suggests that the entire project ended. More accurately, Tesla’s planned August reveal was delayed and replaced by a later event. Reuters reporting published by Inc. described the delay, while later coverage reported Musk’s explanation involving additional development time and design changes.
What Tesla eventually showed
Tesla held its “We, Robot” event on October 10, 2024. The company presented a purpose-built autonomous vehicle that Tesla’s later materials call the Cybercab.

These terms should not be treated as interchangeable:
- Robotaxi describes the transportation service or business concept: autonomous vehicles carrying paying passengers.
- Cybercab describes the purpose-built vehicle Tesla associated with that concept.
- Model Y Robotaxi service refers to a separate operation using existing Model Y vehicles in limited markets.
Tesla’s investor materials described the October event as part of a long-term autonomous-transport strategy and promoted a goal of achieving a cost per mile below rideshare, personal-car ownership, and public transit. That was a company objective—not evidence that the economics had already been demonstrated at scale. Tesla’s October 2024 investor disclosure provides the company’s stated strategy and cost-per-mile goal.
Did Tesla launch a robotaxi service at the reveal?
No. Showing a vehicle at an event is not the same as launching a commercial service. A full robotaxi operation also requires production vehicles, validated software, operational safety procedures, regulatory permissions, insurance and liability arrangements, remote-assistance systems, emergency-response protocols, defined service areas, and customer booking and payment infrastructure.

Tesla’s current Robotaxi page describes Cybercab as a future purpose-built vehicle. It separately advertises autonomous rides in limited areas of Florida and Texas. As of the source check on August 16, 2026, Tesla listed:
- Miami, Orlando, and Tampa, Florida
- Austin, Dallas, and Houston, Texas
Availability can vary by location, time, fleet capacity, and regulatory status. Tesla directs prospective riders to its Robotaxi page and app information rather than presenting the service as nationwide.
Why Tesla’s FSD system is not the same thing
One of the most common errors in coverage is treating Tesla’s consumer Full Self-Driving product as equivalent to a driverless taxi. Tesla’s product is officially called Full Self-Driving (Supervised), and Tesla says it requires the driver’s active attention and does not make the vehicle autonomous.
In practical terms, FSD (Supervised) is an advanced driver-assistance system. It may assist with navigation, lane changes, turns, and parking, but the human driver remains responsible for monitoring the vehicle and responding when necessary. It is not a driverless commercial ride service.

That distinction also applies to price. Tesla’s support page listed a $99-per-month subscription during the dossier’s August 16, 2026 source check, although pricing and availability can change. A subscription to FSD (Supervised) does not buy a robotaxi capability or make a Tesla eligible to operate without a driver. See Tesla’s FSD limitations and subscription information before treating any price as current.
What remained unanswered in April 2024
Musk’s short announcement did not answer the questions that determine whether a robotaxi is a product, a prototype, or a functioning transportation business. At the time, readers could not establish:
- Whether August 8 would show a prototype, announce production, or begin passenger service
- Whether the vehicle would have steering wheels and pedals
- Whether it would use an existing Tesla platform or a new design
- What level of autonomy Tesla would claim
- Where it could legally operate
- Whether Tesla or individual owners would control the fleet
- What rides would cost
- When production or deliveries would begin
- Whether safety drivers, remote operators, or other personnel would be involved
- Which regulatory approvals would be required
- How liability would be assigned after a crash
Tesla has discussed the possibility of using existing vehicles in an autonomous network, but that does not mean every Tesla currently on the road can automatically become a driverless taxi. Vehicle hardware, software capability, eligibility rules, insurance, local regulation, and Tesla’s operating policies would all matter.
What a current Tesla Robotaxi ride means
Tesla’s listed Robotaxi service should be understood as a limited, location-specific ride-hailing operation—not as evidence that Cybercab is already broadly available or that Tesla vehicles generally operate without human oversight everywhere.

Readers interested in trying the service should first check Robotaxi availability for their location and use Tesla’s official app and service instructions. A Tesla purchase is not presented as a requirement for using the ride-hailing service.
Readers considering FSD for a personally owned Tesla should instead review Tesla’s explanation of FSD (Supervised). It can be relevant to supervised driving assistance, but it is technically and legally different from an autonomous taxi.

Yes. Musk announced the planned unveiling on April 5, 2024. The statement referred to a reveal, not a guaranteed service launch.

Tesla postponed it until October. The company held the “We, Robot” event on October 10, 2024.
Was Cybercab available after the October 2024 event?
The event presented the vehicle, but Tesla’s later materials describe Cybercab as a future purpose-built vehicle. Do not confuse the reveal with mass production or broad availability.
Is Tesla Full Self-Driving the same as a driverless robotaxi?
No. Tesla says FSD (Supervised) requires active driver supervision and does not make the vehicle autonomous.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The original report was real, but the August 8 date was missed. Tesla ultimately revealed the Cybercab at its October 10, 2024 “We, Robot” event. That reveal was not the same milestone as launching a broadly available driverless taxi service, and Tesla’s current limited Model Y Robotaxi operations should not be conflated with the future Cybercab.
