The eighth-generation farmer learned to work in the fields near Fort Myers, Florida, while watching his father race; today, he uses his NASCAR visibility to bring attention to the people who grow food. His post-win watermelon smash is more than a celebration: it connects a race-day moment to the family farm behind it.
How Chastain’s family farm and racing grew side by side
In a 2025 profile for Successful Farming, Lisa Foust Prater describes Chastain as an eighth-generation member of a family with watermelon-farming roots. He grew up working alongside his father, grandfather and brother on the family farm near Fort Myers, Florida, while also watching his father race at a nearby track.
The profile traces the family’s farming history to its arrival from France in what is now the United States in 1700. It says Chastain’s great-grandfather moved the farm to Florida in the 1950s to take advantage of an earlier watermelon season. Those dates are the family history as recounted in the profile.
Chastain eventually got behind the wheel himself and won his first local race as a young teenager. He later left the watermelon fields to race full time. The farm and the track were not separate worlds in his childhood: both were places where he learned to show up, respond to problems and keep working.

Why Ross Chastain smashes a watermelon after a win
The watermelon celebration makes the connection visible. After starting last, Chastain won the 2025 Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, a race the profile describes as 400 laps. He celebrated on the track by smashing a watermelon grown on his family’s farm.
The fruit stands for more than a personal trademark. It brings the family’s generations of farm work into the winner’s circle, tying a NASCAR victory to the people and work behind the crop. In that sense, the gesture is both celebration and public acknowledgment of where Chastain comes from.
What is Ag to Asphalt?
Chastain launched Ag to Asphalt in 2023. In the video series, he visits farms near race tracks and uses the attention he receives as a driver to introduce viewers to farmers and food production.
“I get a lot of attention for being a race car driver, and I can redirect that light onto a farm,” he said, according to the Successful Farming profile. “It’s just another way of informing people where their food is coming from and showing the families that are behind the scenes, the ones actually growing the crops.”

The series reflects a deliberate use of his public platform: rather than leaving the farm as background to his racing story, he makes farmers and their work part of the story he tells.
The work habits Chastain says he carries into racing
Chastain says farm work taught him a practical approach to difficult days: get up, address the problems in front of you and do the work. He described that connection this way:

“In ag, you just have to wake up every day, like most jobs, and go solve the problems,” he said. “Problems arise every day. Decisions have to be made. I do that in racing. There are harder days and there are easier days, but you just get up and go do the work. I tend to get real lucky when I show up and do the work.”
He still helps on the family farm when he is home, though the profile says his current role there focuses on promoting watermelons. For farm kids with big ambitions, his advice is simple: keep showing up and doing the work.

When NASCAR sponsorships bring farming into view
The Successful Farming profile also describes a specific farm-themed activation around Chastain’s Iowa 350 car. Its design featured a cornfield scene, promoted ethanol and highlighted Busch Light’s partnership with Farm Rescue. A portion of sales from farm-themed cases was donated to Farm Rescue. That was a particular sponsor promotion, not evidence of a broader partnership beyond what the profile reports.
A watermelon, straight from the farm
For Chastain, the best watermelon is simple: straight off the vine on a hot day, cut open on a truck tailgate. “There’s nothing like it,” he said.
