Jay Leno’s Garage published a first-look feature on the McLaren W1 on March 10, 2025. The car’s standout features are a hybrid V8 producing a manufacturer-claimed 1,275 PS, ground-effect aerodynamics with an active rear wing, and a carbon-fiber monocoque. Here’s what those systems do—and what McLaren’s headline performance figures actually represent.
Which Jay Leno video is this?
The Jay Leno’s Garage video is listed as “McLaren W1 – The Ultimate Hypercar! Jay Leno’s First Look” and was published on March 10, 2025. “Watch Jay Leno Learn The Secrets Of The McLaren W1” is a fitting description, but not the platform title identified for the episode.
What makes the McLaren W1 a hybrid?
McLaren pairs a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8, called the MHP-8, with an electric module in a high-performance hybrid system. The manufacturer describes the E-module as lighter and says the system uses F1-derived battery technology. Power goes through an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission with an integrated E-differential.
McLaren lists combined output at 1,275 PS (1,258 bhp) and maximum torque at 1,340 Nm (988 lb-ft). These are manufacturer specifications, not independently measured results. The available information here does not establish an electric-only driving range or capability, so the hybrid hardware should not be taken to mean the W1 is an electric road car.

How quick is it, according to McLaren?
McLaren’s current specifications list the following performance figures. They are manufacturer claims, not independent test results:
| Measure | McLaren’s stated figure |
|---|---|
| 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) | 2.7 seconds |
| 0–200 km/h (0–124 mph) | 5.8 seconds |
| Top speed | 350 km/h (217 mph) |
McLaren calls the W1 the fastest-accelerating road-legal McLaren it has made. That superlative is limited to the manufacturer’s own road-legal cars; it is not a claim that the W1 is the fastest car overall.

What are the W1’s aerodynamic secrets?
The W1’s aero concept is built around ground effect: shaping airflow beneath the car to help create downforce. McLaren combines that approach with an active front splitter and its Active Long Tail, a moveable rear aero element. The manufacturer says the tail extends 300 mm in Race mode and that the full aero package can produce up to 1,000 kg of downforce—five times the amount in its road configuration.
Those figures describe McLaren’s stated system and conditions, not a measured result for every road or track situation. The key idea is that the aero can change with the selected configuration: the car is designed to balance road use and greater track-focused aerodynamic performance.

What do the chassis and weight figures tell you?
McLaren says the W1 is built around a carbon-fiber Aerocell monocoque and uses Race Active Chassis Control III. The monocoque is the central structure that supports the car and its occupants; the active chassis and aero systems are intended to work together as part of its performance setup.
McLaren lists a dry-lightest weight of 1,399 kg (3,084 lb). “Dry-lightest” is a specific manufacturer weight basis, not a curb-weight figure, so it should not be compared directly with another car’s curb weight.
How many W1s were planned, and what did one cost?
In a March 4, 2025 report, Car and Driver said McLaren planned a run of 399 cars, all already spoken for, and reported a launch-era price of $2.1 million. That report does not establish current availability, resale value, or pricing in every market.
